How to Elect/Waive Insurance Coverage in my.SMU

Health insurance is required for SMU students. See below for how to elect, edit, or waive coverage in the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan.

Getting Started

For Students:

  1. Log into my.SMU at smu.edu/mySMU
  2. From the Student Dashboard, click on the Health Center link in the left-hand sidebar.
  3. Select Elect/Waive Insurance. You will now be able to elect coverage, waive coverage (domestic students only), edit or update waiver information, and view previously elected or waived coverage for the current enrollment term and prior terms.
Please note Students who have no history of prior health insurance enrollment and are not enrolled in class(es) for the current enrollment term are unable to see the Mandatory Health Insurance section.

For Parents/Relations:  

The student must first grant access to the parent/relation in order to view/make health insurance selections.  The student will need to approve a Release of Education Records for before you may access the Mandatory Health Insurance section. Once you have access, follow the instructions below:

  1. Go to smu.edu/mysmu.
  2. Click on Activate account and follow the instructions.
  3. Once logged in to my.SMU, from the Homepage, click on the Student Health Insurance tile.
  4. Select Mandatory Health Insurance section. You will now be able to elect coverage, waive coverage (domestic students only), edit or update waiver information, and view previously elected or waived coverage for the current enrollment term and prior terms.
Please note Students who have no history of prior health insurance enrollment and are not enrolled in class(es) for the current enrollment term are unable to see the Mandatory Health Insurance section.

How to Elect Coverage

Domestic Students:

If you have not yet elected or waived coverage for the current enrollment term, please follow the steps below.

  1. From the Student Dashboard, click on the Health Center link in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Select Wave/Elect Insurance. Select the term for your coverage.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Review the notice.
  5. Click Next to proceed to the next section.
  6. Elect Coverage
    In the Choose to Elect or Waive Coverage window, review the health insurance premiums and then select to Elect or Waive SMU Student Health Insurance Plan.
  7. Click Next to proceed to the next screen.
  8. Please Note:  Once you waive your SMU Student Health Insurance Plan coverage, you cannot go back and Elect for coverage.

International Students:

If you have not yet elected coverage or been approved for a waiver by the SMU Student Health Insurance Office for the current enrollment term, the following page will appear.  International students do not have the ability to waive online; a Waiver Request form must be submitted to the Insurance Office for consideration. 

  1. From the Student Dashboard, click on the Health Center link in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Click Waive/Elect Insurance. Select the term for your coverage.
  3. Click Next.
  4. Review the notice. The notice will only appear during the Fall term.
  5. Click Next to proceed to the next section.
  6. Elect Coverage
    In the Choose to Elect or Waive Coverage window, review the health insurance premiums and then select to Elect or Waive SMU Student Health Insurance Plan.
  7. Click Next to proceed to elect coverage and proceed to the next screen.
  8. Please Note:  If you do not want to proceed with the Elect process, do not click Next because this will elect you in the SMU Health Insurance Plan.  Instead, please click the Cancel button.
  9. Once you Insurance is elected, the insurance fee will be billed to your SMU student account.

What to do if you have been auto-elected

If you have been automatically elected in the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan, an online confirmation will be provided for your review.  You will also receive an email confirmation to your SMU campus email address. 

If you have not elected or waived coverage in the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan for the current enrollment term by the deadline, you will be automatically elected in and charged for the plan.  You will receive an online confirmation when you click on the Mandatory Health Insurance section under Health Center tile.

What to do if you have been early auto-elected

If you chose to Elect the SMU Student Health Insurance Plan for a Fall term (you did not waive and were not auto-elected for Fall), then as a courtesy to you, you will be automatically renewed with continued coverage of the plan for the following Spring term.  The online confirmation will display when you click on the Mandatory Health Insurance section under Health Center tile.

How to Waive Coverage

If you have not yet elected or waived coverage for the current enrollment term, you will receive a notice when you log in to the Mandatory Health Insurance section of my.SMU.  The notice will only appear during a Fall term.   

To Waive Coverage:

  1. Select the term for your coverage.
  2. Click Next.
  3. Review the notice.
  4. Click Next to proceed to the next section.
  5. Elect Coverage Selection
    In the Choose to Elect or Waive Coverage window, review the health insurance premiums and then select Waive SMU Student Health Insurance Plan.
    Please Note:  Once you waive your SMU Student Health Insurance Plan coverage, you cannot go back and Elect for coverage.
  6. Click Next to proceed to the next screen.
  7. Review the waiver notice and click the acknowledgement checkbox to indicate that you have accepted the waiver terms and conditions and click Next.
  8. Enter the details of your personal insurance company.  All fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. Once all required information is entered, click Next. The waiver is not complete until you click Next.
  9. An online confirmation for your waiver of coverage will display, plus a Waive confirmation email will be sent to the student’s SMU campus email address (and to the parent’s email if the parent is the one logged in to waive coverage).  Click Next to return to the Student Homepage.

How to View, Edit, or Update Your Coverage Information

  1. From the Student Dashboard, click on the Health Center link in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Select Elect/Waive Insurance.
  3. In the Health Center window, you should already be on the Mandatory Health Insurance section. Select the term for your coverage.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Review the notice. Click Next to proceed to the next page.
  6. At the Waive Coverage Update page, select your coverage.
    • I have lost/will lose my insurance coverage.
      If will lose (or have lost) your personal insurance coverage, use this option to report it to the SMU Health Insurance Office. Use the form to enter the date the coverage was/will be terminated.  Click Next to confirm your cancellation.
    • I need to edit my current insurance or pharmacy information.
      If you waived coverage for the current enrollment term and need to edit any of the information you provided, use this option. Your previously information will be auto-populated and available for editing.  You will be able to change any field, noting that all fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. Click Next to confirm your waiver edits.
    • My insurance has changed. I need to supply new information.
      If you waived coverage for the current enrollment term and need to provide completely new information on your personal insurance company and pharmacy information, use this option. Your previously information will be auto-populated and available for editing.  Enter the new insurance company, policyholder, and pharmacy information, noting that all fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required. Click Next to confirm your changes.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Enter the new details for your insurance coverage.
  9. Click Next to confirm the changes.
  10. An online confirmation for your waiver of coverage will display, plus a Waive confirmation email will be sent to the student’s SMU campus email address (and to the parent’s email if the parent is the one logged in to waive coverage).  Click Next to return to the Student Homepage.
