FAQs
The CrashPlan agent requires your SMU ID and password to launch the initial backup. It also requires that same ID and password to access the backup file stored on the server. The backup itself is completely encrypted. During the backup process, all data is fully encrypted and secured in transit from your computer to the server storage in our data center. Therefore, you are the only one with access to the data.
CrashPlan is configured to back up the entire user profile on the computer. Those will be included if you store your files in the default locations (My Documents, Desktop, etc.). CrashPlan backs up only inactive or saved files, protecting certain data types such as database files from potential corruption.
If you typically store files in nonstandard locations, such as the root directory, you will need to move those folders to the default location for them to be included in the CrashPlan backup. Certain file types are exempted from the backup process, including software installers (MSI, WIM, ISO, or DMG files) and virtual machines. If you need to back up files located on a virtual machine, don't hesitate to get in touch with the IT Help Desk for assistance.
