Enterprise Client Backup

What is CrashPlan Pro?

CrashPlan Pro is a software application that can be installed on Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms. After installation, it performs a complete backup of your profile or home directory (file folder structure). Once the initial backup is complete, the application will backup any changes every three hours. Although the process runs continuously in the background, it utilizes very few resources. This process is fully automated and requires no user intervention! When you need to recover data, there's a quick and easy process to locate the folders or files you need from the backup client.

The backup server itself does not have any additional backup repository due to the size of the storage and cost constraints.  If there is an issue with the server, we will remediate the issue and then client systems will repopulated backups as needed.

Who is Eligible?

CrashPlan Pro is licensed for University-owned Faculty and Staff primary machines only. Secondary machines and personal machines are not eligible for the software.

How Do I Obtain the Software?

The software package is currently available on the Ivanti software portal on primary machines only. Individuals can install the client at their own convenience.

In addition, any time there is a new machine installation, CrashPlan will be installed and restoration initiated during the setup process. This will restore the files from your old SMU computer to the new one automatically.

How Secure is the Backup?

The CrashPlan agent requires your SMU ID and password to launch the initial backup. It also requires that same ID and Password to access the backup file stored on the server. The backup itself is completely encrypted. During the backup process, all data is fully encrypted and secured in transit from your computer to the server storage in our datacenter. Therefore, you are the only one with access to the data.

What is Included in the Backup?

CrashPlan is configured to backup the entire user profile on the machine. If you store your files in the default locations (My Documents, Desktop etc), those will be included. CrashPlan backs up only inactive or saved files, protecting certain types of data such as database files from potential corruption.

What is NOT Included in the Backup?

If you typically store files in nonstandard locations (for example in the root directory), you will need to move those folders to the default location in order for them to be included in the backup. Back up exceptions at this time include software installers such as MSI, WIM, ISO or DMG files, as well as all virtual machines. To back up files located on a virtual machine, please contact the IT Help Desk for assistance.

How Do I Restore Data from the Backup?

If you deleted a file from your computer but wish to restore that file, you can do so from your backup files.

Code42 CrashPlan

Launch the Code42 CrashPlan agent and click on Get Files. You can then navigate to the files and folders you wish to restore. After checking the boxes for the files you want to restore, click Get Files.
