Student Email Configuration (Office 365)

The instructions for configuring your device to retrieve your SMU email vary slightly depending on the device and email client. However, the email settings are the same no matter which device you have.

General Configuration Information

Server Name:
Username: Your e-mail address
Password: Your SMU Password
Please note:  If you are running Windows 8.1 and wish to use Outlook, you must upgrade to Outlook 2013.

Device Instructions

iPhone, iPads and other iOS Devices

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS Mobile Device
  2. Scroll down and tap Accounts & Passwords
  3. Tap Add Account
  4. Select Exchange from the list
  5. Enter the following information when prompted:
    1. Email Address: Your SMU email address. It should look like this: NOT
    2. Description: Whatever you want to call the account (Exchange, SMU, etc.)
  6. Tap Next; if prompted, select sign in
  7. Select Work or School Account
  8. Enter your SMU ID number in the username field and password in the password field and click Login
  9. When prompted for Administrator Approval, select Approve
  10. Select the apps you want to use with the account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes)
  11. Tap Save
Please Note:  The wireless connection may need to be off on the iPhone's configuration settings or it needs to be connected to a secure network, such as PerunaNet (on campus.) It may also help to turn wireless off and back on again to regain the correct connection to PerunaNet.  There is also a dedicated app available for iOS devices called OWA for iPhone if you don't want to use the native mail client.

iPhone Contact Names Disappeared?

If your contacts on your iPhone disappear after the migration, don’t panic!  They can easily be retrieved.

  1. Click Settings
  2. Click iCloud
  3. Turn off the synchronization with Contacts.  Select “leave on my phone”
  4. Turn on the synchronization with contacts.  Select “merge”

 Everything should be back to normal!

Android Devices

  1. Click Settings
  2. Go to Accounts and Sync
  3. Select the existing SMU account and click Delete Account
  4. Click Add Account
  5. Select Email
  6. Then Select Office 365
  7. Enter your E-mail address
  8. Click Next
  9.  Then it will ask for your username (SMU ID) and password
  10. Click Login
  11. Then click Accept Microsoft terms

Mac Mail (Built-in E-mail Client in OS X)

Please follow these directions to have your e-mail configure properly.

  1. Go to System Preferences, then Internet Accounts.
  2. Select the Exchange option.
  3. Enter the following information when prompted:
    1. Description: Your preferred name for this account on your computer.
    2. Username: Your SMU e-mail address
  4. Click Continue, the setup will direct you to a login page where you will enter your SMU ID number and password.
  5. Once completed, you can then open Mac Mail.

Active Sync (Windows Mobile Phones)

  1. On the Main Applications screen, click on Active Sync.
  2. Click menu
  3. Select Add New Server Source.
  4. Enter as the server name
  5. If you are prompted to enter an SMU ID number, password, and domain, enter the following:
    Username: SMU e-mail address
    Password: SMU Password
    Domain: Leave blank.


If your Blackberry device support Exchange, follow these settings:

  1. Click New Email Setup
  2. Username should be your email address and then enter your SMU Password.
  3. The setup will FAIL! That is expected.  There should then be an option to provide the settings manually.
  4. Choose Outlook Exchange for the email type
  5. Server:
  6. Username: Your SMU e-mail address
  7. Mailbox Name: email alias (first part of your email address)
  8. Password: your email password

SMU Departmental Mailboxes for Office 365 Users

To access a departmental mailbox after your email has moved to Office 365, type the following address into your address bar:

(Replace EMAIL with the departmental account's e-mail address)

You will be taken to a login page where you can log in with your SMU ID number and password.
