Student E-mail Configuration (Office 365)

The instructions for configuring your device to retrieve your SMU email vary slightly depending on the device and email client. However, the email settings are the same no matter which device you have.

Please note:  If you are running Windows 8.1 and wish to use Outlook, you must upgrade to Outlook 2013.

General Configuration Information

Server Name:
Username: Your e-mail address
Password: Your SMU Password

IMAP and SMTP General Settings

If your email client does not support Exchange you can use these alternate settings to retrieve your email using IMAP and SMTP.  For both protocols, use your SMU email address and your SMU password.


Port: 993
Security Settings: SSL/TLS 


Port: 587
Security Settings: STARTTLS

Device Instructions

iPhone, iPads and other iOS Devices

Please Note:  The wireless connection needs to be off on the iPhone's configuration settings or it needs to be connected to a secure network, such as PerunaNet (on campus.) It may also help to turn wireless off and back on again to regain the correct connection to PerunaNet.  There is also a dedicated app available for iOS devices called OWA for iPhone if you don't want to use the native mail client.
  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS Mobile Device
  2. Scroll down and tap Accounts & Passwords
  3. Tap Add Account
  4. Select Exchange from the list
  5. Enter the following information when prompted:
    1. Email Address: Your SMU email address. It should look like this: NOT
    2. Description: Whatever you want to call the account (Exchange, SMU, etc.)
  6. Tap Next; if prompted, select configure manually 
  7. Enter the following information when prompted:
    1. Server Address:
    2. Domain: SMU
  8. Enter your password in the Password field, if prompted again, and click Next
  9. Select the apps you want to use with the account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes)
  10. Tap Save

iPhone Contact Names Disappeared?

If your contacts on your iPhone disappear after the migration, don’t panic!  They can easily be retrieved.

  1. Click Settings
  2. Click iCloud
  3. Turn off the synchronization with Contacts.  Select “leave on my phone”
  4. Turn on the synchronization with contacts.  Select “merge”

 Everything should be back to normal!

Android Devices

  1. Click Settings
  2. Go to Accounts and Sync
  3. Select the existing SMU account and click Delete Account
  4. Click Add Account
  5. Select Corporate (MS Exchange)
  6. Enter your E-mail address and Password
  7. Click Next
  8. It will automatically attempt to configure the phone, but will fail.  It will fill in several fields that need to be corrected
  9. Domain\Username: Enter your SMU e-mail address.  (If those two fields are listed separately, the domain is left blank. The username is your SMU e-mail address)
  10. Exchange Server:
  11. Use Secure connection should be checked
  12. Click Next
  13. Click Finish

Mac Mail (Built-in E-mail Client in OS X)

Please follow these directions to have your e-mail configure properly.

  1. Go to System Preferences, then Internet Accounts.
  2. Select the Exchange option.
  3. Enter the following information when prompted:
    1. Description: Your preferred name for this account on your computer.
    2. Username: Your SMU e-mail address
    3. Password: Your SMU password.
  4. Click Continue, the setup will fail and request the server address:
  5. Once completed, you can then open Mac Mail.

Active Sync (Windows Mobile Phones)

  1. On the Main Applications screen, click on Active Sync.
  2. Click menu
  3. Select Add New Server Source.
  4. Enter as the server name
  5. If you are prompted to enter an SMU ID number, password, and domain, enter the following:
    Username: SMU e-mail address
    Password: SMU Password
    Domain: Leave blank.


If your Blackberry device support Exchange, follow these settings:

  1. Click New Email Setup
  2. Username should be your email address and then enter your SMU Password.
  3. The setup will FAIL! That is expected.  There should then be an option to provide the settings manually.
  4. Choose Outlook Exchange for the email type
  5. Server:
  6. Username: Your SMU e-mail address
  7. Mailbox Name: email alias (first part of your email address)
  8. Password: your email password


SMU Departmental Mailboxes for Office 365 Users

To access a departmental mailbox after your email has moved to Office 365, type the following address into your address bar:

(Replace EMAIL with the departmental account's e-mail address.)

You will be taken to a login page where you can log in with your SMU ID number and password.
