Microsoft Authenticator

Multifactor Authentication (MFA) for SMU

Microsoft Authenticator

Multifactor Authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator is an extra layer of protection that makes it more difficult for someone else to log into your SMU Account. By using MFA and Microsoft Authenticator, you help protect your personal information, as well as sensitive and confidential SMU resources and data.

 Please Note:

Beginning February 25, 2026, SMU will be transitioning from Duo to Microsoft Authenticator for multi-factor authentication (MFA).

For more information or to opt-in early, please visit the Microsoft Authenticator service page.

If you need assistance, please contact the IT Help Desk.

Microsoft Authenticator is a free app that adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. When you sign in, you’ll get a quick notification on your phone—just tap to approve. No need to remember extra codes!

  • Fast & easy: One tap to sign in
  • Extra protection: Keeps your info safe
  • Works with many accounts: Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and more

Stay secure without the hassle.

Get Started

  1. Complete the Microsoft Authenticator enrollment form at smu.edu/passwordless
  2. Visit smu.edu/mfasetup.
  3. Configure the app to support SMU MFA by following these instructions.
  4. Successfully log into systems with new Microsoft Authenticator app.

Please Note: You will be signed out of all current SSO logon sessions—including phone and email. Please think carefully about the best time and day in your schedule to minimize disruptions before filling out the form.

Once you become an early adopter, you will be required to reauthenticate into all SMU SSO services using the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app. Please be advised that this could be disruptive to your workflow. Scheduling during regular IT Help Desk business hours is advised.
