Pay for Print System
PaperCut is the pay-to-print system utilized by OIT to manage publicly available printers. Faculty, staff, students and guests are able to print to various public printers from public workstations or personal devices.
Getting Started
Submit a Job to the Public Printers
There are several ways to submit a job to the public printers:
- Using the pre-configured printers on the public workstations in the libraries or labs (support printing files greater than 10MB)
- Sending your print job to a specific email address (from SMU Email addresses only)(File must be less than 10MB)
- Submitting your job via a web browser (File must be less than 10MB)
Once the job has been submitted, you are able to release that job from any of the public printers that support the desired output. For example, a color print job could be released from any of the color printers in the public spaces across campus. For students and guests, a charge is assessed for any copy/print job in the public spaces.
For detailed instructions on printing, please see How To Print With PaperCut.

Print Quotas
Several schools or departments have funded a print quota for their students. These are configured on an annual basis. Once the student has printed their allocated number of free prints, the costs will be assessed to their personal account. Students will be notified by their individual schools or degree programs if they have a print quota allocated to them.

Employee Printing
Employee printing is covered by the University printing fund. Employees, including staff, faculty, and temporary employees, are able to print to designated printers near their office as well as the public printers. No fees are assessed to the individual employee accounts for copies/prints. For public printers, employees will need to swipe their ID cards in order to release the jobs from the print server to the public printer.
How To Print With PaperCut
We have multiple options for printing to campus printers managed by the PaperCut Pay for Print System.
Submitting Jobs through Email.
In order to release a job submitted through email, it must be submitted from the email address associated with your PaperCut account. For faculty, staff, and students, it must come from your default SMU email address. For guests, it must come from whichever address was included in the creation of the papercut account.
There are different email addresses for the various configurations of the print job. Each email should contain a single file in a standard format (pdf, doc, xls etc).
- Save your file in the appropriate format
- Open a new mail message from your SMU email account
- Enter the address for the print queue depending on the desired output
- Attach the single file to your email
- Click Send
- Visit a public printer that supports your desired output
- Swipe your ID card or release the print job through the release station

PaperCut Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. For WebPrint and Email submitted jobs, the file can not exceed 10MB in size. If you need to print a larger file, please use one of the SMU computers in the various libraries and labs. These will allow larger print jobs.
In order for PaperCut to facilitate the charging for the print, it must associate the document to your PaperCut account. By default, all SMU faculty, staff and student accounts are associated with the SMU email address. So, you must send the document from your SMU account in order to release the job at the printer.
For guests, the email may be sent from the personal address registered when you created your PaperCut account.
Please contact the staff at the appropriate circulation desks to assist. You can resend your print job and they will be able to release the job without charging your account. If you no longer need to print the document, you can submit a request for a refund.
- Login to printing.smu.edu with your SMU account and password
- Click Recent Print Jobs
- Locate the job that needs to be refunded
- Click Request Refund
- Enter the reason for the refund
- Click Send
The Help Desk will review the refund request. Once approved, you will receive an email confirmation and the funds will be returned to your PaperCut account.
Your account is charged as soon as the file is sent to the printer. If the document is not released within 4 hours, the job is deleted from the print queue and the charges to your account are returned.
For student accounts, you can add funds to your ID card account via idcard.smu.edu.
For guests, funds are added via PaperCut/Touchnet. You will need to login to your PaperCut account via printing.smu.edu and complete the transfer request. A credit card is required to replenish funds. Cash will no longer be accepted.
- Login to Printing.smu.edu
- Click Add Credit
- Select the desired amount
- Enter your credit card information to complete the processing
Please note: Refunds for account balances are not available. Please plan accordingly when adding money to your account.
