Graduate Financial Aid

Working toward, and ultimately earning your graduate degree can be one of the best decisions you will ever make.   Deciding what and where to study can be exhilarating and exciting.  It can also be confusing and stressful, especially when you consider the costs associated with earning an advanced degree.  We believe that your time and energy should be spent focusing on your studies instead of your finances.

The SMU Graduate Financial Aid Office was created to provide graduate students with a reliable resource for information on issues unique to graduate programs.

Announcements, Dates & Deadlines

2020-2021 Academic Year (Fall 2020 – Summer 2021):

  • All scholarships for graduate-level programs are awarded by the academic departments; not by the financial aid office.  Once you have been notified that your award package is ready for acceptance, log into my.SMU to confirm and accept your aid package.   If your scholarship does not appear as part of your aid package, please contact your academic department to information.
  • The 2020-2021 FAFSA is available for use.  Go to to complete and submit your 2020-2021 application for federal and state financial aid programs. SMU strongly encourages use of the Data Retreival Tool (DRT) as your complete your FAFSA.  The FAFSA DRT will automatically pull your 2018 tax information from the IRS and minimize your chances of being selected for verification, errors and reduce processing wait times.
  • Financial Aid awarding cycle for the 2020-2021 academic year is scheduled as follows:
    • New incoming graduate student awards are scheduled to begin in late April and will continue on a rolling basis.
    • Returning/Continuing graduate student awards will not begin until mid to late June after all of your grades from the prior SPRING term have been evaluated and posted.
  • Scholarship awards and renewals are authorized by the Academic Department and submitted to the Office of Financial Aid to be incorporated into your total financial aid package.  Please contact your academic department with any questions.
  • Award notifications will be sent to your SMU email address.  You will also be notified to check your Financial Aid Award tile when you log into My.SMU.
  • Students who utilize credit-based loan funding such as the Federal GradPLUS, Texas College Access Loan (CAL), or a private consumer based education loan must submit a new loan application specifically for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Federal aid for any given term requires a minimum of part-time enrollment (usually 4.5 credit hours).  For enrollment of less than 4.5 hours, students may utilize one of the private lenders listed in the Types of Financial Aid link at the top of the page.

Students who are considering withdrawing or dropping a class should contact their Financial Aid advisor for additional information regarding how that may affect their federal aid eligibility.
