In response to the President’s Task Force recommendation to re-establish the practice of early intervention grade reporting, early intervention grade rosters are produced for all enrolled undergraduate students who are in any of the following categories:

  • Fall and Spring new students from high school student groups for the current academic year
  • Fall and Spring new transfer student groups for the current academic year
  • Fall and Spring readmitted students for the current academic year
  • Undergraduates on academic probation, regardless of hours earned
  • Undergraduates who are receiving  VA benefits, regardless of hours earned
  • Undergraduates with less than 30 hours earned at SMU (excludes advanced standing and transfer hours) who are not already included

Log on to my.SMU and click "Faculty Center". Choose the grade roster for which you want to enter grades.

Review Your Roster

If you have students who have deficient grades

  1. Enter one of the following grades: C-, D+, D, D-, F, FA (Failure due to attendance), or FT (Failure due to tests).
  2. If there is a "W" grade showing in the Official Grade column, the course has been dropped and you do not have to enter a grade for this student.
  3. After you enter the grades, click SAVE, and EXIT the roster.

NOTE: The “Approval Status” box is now grayed out because it is not a part of the Early Grading Process.

If you do not have any students on the grade roster making a C- or below

  1. Look for the checkbox labeled “Roster Reviewed, No Deficiencies”
  2. Check it, Click save, and exit the roster

FAQs

Q. I don’t have a grade roster. Why?
A. You have no students in your class who fall into one of the following categories:

  • Fall and Spring new students from high school student groups for the current academic year
  • Fall and Spring new transfer student groups for the current academic year
  • Fall and Spring readmitted students for the current academic year
  • Undergraduates on academic probation, regardless of hours earned
  • Undergraduates who are receiving  VA benefits, regardless of hours earned
  • Undergraduates with less than 30 hours earned at SMU (excludes advanced standing and transfer hours) who are not already included

Q. Why aren’t all the students in my class listed on the early grade roster?
A. Only students in the early invention grading cohort are on the roster. If a student is not on the early intervention grade roster then they are not in the targeted group to receive early progress grades.

Q. My students know how they are doing in my class, do I really need to submit early intervention grades?
A. We recognize that students may already know that they are not doing well in your class. Please take the time to enter the deficient grades on the early grade roster anyway. Doing so helps others identify students that may be struggling academically. If none of the students on your early grade roster currently have a deficient grade, please report that as well. It is the aggregate of the information that allows others to get a sense of how these students are doing at this point in the term.

Q. Why won’t it let me “Approve” my roster?
A. You do not have to “Approve” your Early Intervention Roster, only SAVE and exit the Roster. The “Approval Status” box is used only for End of Term Grading.

Q. Should I enter grades for everyone on my roster, even the ones who are doing well?
A. No. Only enter grades for students who are making a C- or below (including FA or FT).

Q. When I look back at my roster, it looks the same. Did I do it correctly?
A. Yes, the roster will still look the same, but when you save and exit, it is finished.

Q. Do I have to get the grades in by the 11:59 PM deadline?
A. The deadline is system enforced, therefore, grades cannot be entered after the deadline.

NOTE: You will not receive an email confirmation that grades have been entered and received.

Q. I made an error when entering one of the deficient grades. Can I change it?

A. Unlike final grades, progress grades will not be posted. Therefore, you can change the progress grades up until the grading deadline.  Just make the change that is needed on the grade roster, and click SAVE, before the grading deadline.

Q. I checked the "Roster Reviewed, No Deficiency” box on my grade roster and clicked save, but just realized one of the students should have a deficient grade reported.  Can I enter the deficient grade now?
A. As long as it is before the grading deadline, you can make a change.  You will need to uncheck the “Roster Reviewed, No Deficiency” box and click SAVE, then go out of the grade roster.  When you go back to the grade roster you will be able to enter the deficient grade.  Be sure to click SAVE afterwards!
