Ammar Yacoub

Ph.D. candidate, Mechanical Engineering

Ammar Yacoub

Research Interests: Ammar’s research focuses on haptic technologies, biomechatronics, and the development of intelligent mechatronic systems for medical applications. His current work involves developing a haptic-enabled virtual palpation system that integrates 3D elastography medical imaging with a glove-based interface to provide clinicians with realistic force feedback for improved tissue assessment. He is also investigating robust and adaptive nonlinear control techniques for pneumatic actuators to enhance force tracking performance in haptic and robotic systems. Through the integration of mechanical design, sensing, and advanced control methods, his research aims to advance human–machine interaction technologies for healthcare applications.

Road to the Moody School: Before pursuing his Ph.D. at SMU, Ammar earned his Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Jordan in 2018, where he developed an early interest in research through his experience as an undergraduate research assistant. Following graduation, he worked as an automation engineer in the beverage industry, gaining over five years of professional experience in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting industrial automation systems. While working as an engineer, he continued his academic development and earned his Master’s degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2022. His combined experiences in research, industry, and advanced engineering education motivated him to pursue doctoral studies at SMU, where he continues to develop innovative mechatronic technologies.
