Ian Shaughnessy

My research centers on the intersection of narrative theory and contemporary fiction, giving particular attention to how formal innovations reflect and respond to cultural trauma and sociopolitical change vis-à-vis LGBTQ+ and speculative narratives. I work across various mediums—including novels, comic books, film, and television—to show how queer artists weaponize speculative narrative to resist traditionally established practices (both literary and political) and rebel against normative institutions and value systems that promote exclusionary policies.
