As we wrap up the term and calendar year, we have a lot of news we want to share with you, from SMU at SC22, to networking enhancements at East Campus, to improved Identity Management, and a worm going digital, plus so much more.

SMU Gallops into Supercomputing 2022!



From November 13 to 17, Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center in Downtown Dallas was home to Supercomputing 2022 (SC22), where leading minds, including those from SMU, and vendors in high-powered computing, came together to share knowledge and celebrate recent innovations.

Technology Community Recognizes OIT Leaders



Recently, a couple of members of the Office of Information Technology's leadership team have been selected as finalists, and even winners, in their fields.

A New Chapter of Identity Management on The Hilltop



OIT has embarked on an exciting multi-year, multi-project journey to modernize Identity and Access Management (IAM) services at SMU and replace our in-house developed AMA.

Tiny Computer, Huge Learnings: Students at SMU Build Baby Supercomputer



Conner Ozenne ’23, in collaboration with other SMU students and faculty, built the Hyer Performance Cluster, also known as the baby supercomputer, from scratch in just four months.

New Fiber Connections Speed Up East Campus



Recent projects have taken place to replace these wireless connections in SMU's East Campus with direct fiber optic connections to the rest of the SMU network.

Who would have thought that a simple question over a game at the Rec Center would result in a fascinating visualization project for the Data and Application Services team?

Using Pronouns with IT Services



Many of our technology systems allow you to state these pronouns within your profile, and we have outlined the process to update your pronouns for several of our IT services.

Faculty/Staff Email Accounts to Move to the Cloud



Soon, OIT will migrate faculty and staff email accounts to our Microsoft 365 cloud service to simplify mailbox management and reduce University costs.

DUO: A Substantial Expansion



Six years ago, SMU implemented DUO two-factor authentication to protect our data proactively and has successfully expanded it throughout many of the University's IT services.

University Moves to Restrict Common Words for Passwords



In an effort to strengthen password security, new passwords may not contain all or part of the user’s account name, common passwords, or words related to an SMU campaign that are vulnerable to password-guessing attacks.

OIT’s ATS Offers New Canvas LMS Workshops



To help our faculty and instructors stay on course with instructional technology, OIT's Academic Technology Services Team is offering several workshops in December and January for the new term.

Modern Authentication and You



We have implemented more modern authentication methods to our Microsoft services to increase security and improve your login experience.

Updated Retention Policies for Panopto Coming Soon



Beginning January 1, 2023, SMU’s retention policy for instructional videos hosted in Panopto will be regulated with a new retention policy.

Duo Mobile Ends Support for Android 8/9 and iOS 13



Effective February 9, 2023, Duo Mobile will no longer support Android 8, Android 9, and iOS 13. We highly recommend the SMU community upgrade their devices operating systems.
