Financial aid eligibility
To maximize your eligibility for financial aid, follow these tips:
➡️ Complete the required applications:
- Undergraduate students: Submit the FAFSA and CSS Profile as early as possible. If you would like to be considered for the SMU Opportunity or Access SMU programs, submitting the CSS Profile is required. The FAFSA school code is 003613, and the CSS Profile code is 6660.
- Graduate students: Submit the FAFSA as early as possible. The FAFSA school code is 003613. If you are seeking scholarships from your graduate program, contact your academic department (not Financial Aid Services) for more information.
➡️ Know the timeline: Look out for your financial aid offer. Offers will be sent to admitted students only.
- Incoming undergraduate students: Financial aid offers are mailed and made available in the my.SMU portal a few weeks after receipt of the admittance letter.
- Continuing undergraduate students: Notifications are sent to the SMU e-mail account mid to late May your financial aid offer is available in the my.SMU portal.
- Transfer undergraduates: Financial aid offers are mailed and available in my.SMU late May for fall transfers. Spring transfer financial aid offers are available in late November for the following spring term.

➡️ Stay on top of additional requests: Check your SMU email regularly for any requests for additional documents needed to finalize your financial aid offer. Monitor your to-do checklist in my.SMU to ensure all requirements are complete.
➡️ Scholarship renewal and GPA requirements: Students must meet enrollment and GPA requirements for scholarship renewal. Please review and ensure you are meeting requirements for your specific scholarship(s). Grades from other colleges/universities will not be calculated into your SMU GPA, but you may receive transfer course credit with prior academic departmental approval.
- Continuing undergraduate students: Scholarship eligibility will be reviewed at the end of the spring term, once grades are posted. If your GPA is below the minimum requirement, you can enroll in SMU May or summer term(s) to potentially raise your GPA before the start of the next Fall term. Grades from other institutions will not be calculated into your SMU GPA.
- Graduate students: For inquiries regarding scholarships through your graduate program, please contact your academic department and specify which graduate program you are in. Your academic department will provide renewal requirements.
➡️ Access your aid offer: If you are an incoming student, your financial aid offer will be mailed and accessible through your my.SMU portal for convenient online access. If you are a continuing student, you will receive an email notification when your financial aid offer is ready to review in my.SMU
