Alumni Spotlight: Veronica Pesantes
Art history alum Veronica Pesantes (B.A. ’94) turned the critical thinking and cultural perspective she developed at Meadows into a global career in the arts.
Veronica Pesantes (B.A. ’94) is this week’s featured alum in our new Alumni Spotlight series for the This Week at Meadows e-newsletter. Each week, a different Meadows alum will be highlighted for their accomplishments post-graduation.
Students in Meadows’ art history program are encouraged to explore how art connects to culture, politics and society. Art history alum Veronica Pesantes has built a career in the global arts world and now channels that experience into her entrepreneurial venture, Miami Art Hang. As a writer, curator, cultural strategist, and art advisor, Pesantes works to deepen public engagement with art while guiding both collectors and novices through Miami’s vibrant contemporary scene.
Pesantes’ time at Meadows was pivotal in shaping her three-decade career in the arts. Between influential faculty and hands-on museum experience, she began to approach art through a broader cultural lens. In fact, sitting in Dr. Alessandra Comini’s art history classes not only inspired her to become an educator and scholar, but to think about art in a more socio-political manner.
“Dr. Comini’s engaging lectures made culture come to life in kaleidoscopic ways and she had the capacity to turn anyone who was fortunate enough to sit in on her lectures into a lifelong art lover,” says Pesantes, who was able to apply this passion to her both her classwork and sophomore year internship at the Meadows Museum. “I interned in the education department co-writing material for Mexican photographer Flor Garduño’s exhibition, which fomented my desire to learn more about Latin American art.”
Those formative experiences set Pesantes on a path that eventually led her to graduate study at the University of Chicago, where she received a full academic scholarship and earned her master’s degree. Her early career included positions at renowned institutions such as the Prado Museum and the Guggenheim Museum. Through these roles she developed expertise in museum education and curatorial work.

“As an art historian I have a deep reverence for the artist process and I would see people fly through exhibitions without pausing to learn more about the history and context,” Pesantes explains. “Framing art in a more critical context enhances the appreciation and experience.”
That philosophy ultimately led her to found Miami Art Hang, an immersive arts experience designed to decode the city’s rapidly evolving art scene. The afternoon-long program combines guided museum and gallery visits with private studio tours where participants meet both established and emerging artists.
Pesantes also works as an art advisor and writer, and her advocacy for deeper engagement with art has led to multiple curatorial opportunities, including three exhibitions she organized in the past year.
Today, Pesantes continues to build connections across artists, collectors and cultural institutions while expanding the reach of Miami Art Hang. Her work reflects a lifelong commitment to thoughtful art engagement, one that began in Meadows classrooms and now shapes how audiences experience art in one of the country’s most dynamic cultural cities.
