Mercedes Muratalla

Mercedes Muratalla is a second-year M.A. student with a research focus in early modern European and Hispanic fashion, adornment and art. While she has curated and researched garments spanning into the 20th and 21st centuries, Muratalla is particularly interested in luxurious and sumptuous fashions, and the ways in which garments formed individual and collective subjectivities across the early modern Hispanic world. Muratalla received her B.A. in Art History and B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of North Texas in 2026. Her research has not only been supported by fellowships from the Texas Fashion Collection and the University of North Texas Honors’ College, but was most recently published by the Costume Society of America’s journal, Dress, in 2025. Alongside her role as graduate student, Muratalla also works with the Carl and Marilynn D. Thoma Foundation as a curatorial intern in the Art of the Spanish Americas Collection.
