Laura Martin

Laura Martin is a Ph.D. candidate in Art History at SMU, specializing in the art of the early modern Hispanic world. Her research explores religious visual culture and its uses during this period, with a particular focus on the intersections of gender, sexuality and devotion. Her dissertation, Divine Intimacy: Sexuality and Spirituality in Early Modern Hispanic Art, reexamines canonical works from the Spanish and Mexican traditions in relation to early modern understandings of sexuality and religious devotion. Her research also draws extensively on archival sources, using the archive to illuminate how individuals engaged with religious images in both orthodox and nonorthodox ways.
