Confirmed COVID-19 Cases on Campus

We are committed to transparency and alerting the community as cases are identified and verified.
As SMU is informed of positive COVID-19 cases, the University uses a contact tracing protocol to identify and notify people on campus known to have come into close contact with the person infected. This process takes place before SMU publishes a case to this site. Close contact is described by the Centers for Disease Control as being within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes (without direct respiratory droplet exposure) over a 24-hour period.
*Note: Some students are isolating at their permanent address while others are in University isolation units.

SMU faculty and staff that have tested positive for COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone that has tested positive for COVID-19 must fill outthe SMU Health Reporting Form. Students must complete aCaring Community Connections Form. You will be contacted by the university contact tracing team in order to work through isolation and quarantine procedures if needed.
All individuals testing positive for COVID-19 are contacted and confidentially interviewed to identify people who came into close contact with the infected individual. University employees are trained on contract tracing by Johns Hopkins University and follow county, state, and federal guidelines. The CDC defines “close contact” as being within 6 feet of an infected individual for 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period.
This trace assesses the class schedule, living situation, activities, work locations including offices and job sites, face-to-face meetings and any other situations that may have resulted in close contact from 2 days before the onset of symptoms or testing (if asymptomatic).
This process will evolve as we add technology to further support these efforts.
