Featured Resource: BeyondProf Career Training Platform

Moody students can fully participate in the resources available through Beyond the Professoriate's Training Platform. This resource contains workbooks, recorded workshops, live webinars, podcasts, and interviews -- all of which is targeted at helping graduate students and postdocs prepare for the range of diverse careers available to them. To access the tool, click the link below, select Southern Methodist University from the drop-down menu, and log in using your SMU credentials.

Hegi Family Career Development Center

The Hegi Family Career Development Center at SMU is dedicated to serving the needs of SMU students and assisting employers in reaching qualified SMU candidates.  On the Hegi Center website, you can access Handshake to find jobs and internships as well as professional development and employer engagement events on campus, schedule career-counseling appointments, and learn about drop-in appointments.


 
 

 


On-Demand Career Resources

ImaginePhD is a free online tool that can help you identify your skills, interests, and values, explore diverse career paths, set goals, and make a plan. You will need to make an account directly on the site itself; your SMU log-in credentials are not required.

MyIDP is a tool to help scientists create an individual development plan for their career and professional development. You will find assessments to help you identify your skills, interests, and values, resources to help you learn about careers in science, and a framework to help you set and achieve your goals.

How to access: Simply create an account on the MyIDP homepage. You do not need your SMU login credentials to access this tool.

Handshake is SMU's platform for searching for jobs, connecting with employers, registering for appointments and workshops with the Hegi Family Career Development Center, and accessing some of SMU's online career development resources. As many as half of the job postings on Handshake indicate interest in hiring a Master's student, a doctoral student, or a postdoctoral trainee.

How to access: As an SMU student, you already have a Handshake account. Click the link below, indicate you are an SMU affiliate, and login using your SMU ID number and password.

LinkedIn Learning is an online library of thousands of training videos to help users build skills. Some training sequences offer badges that can be displayed on your LinkedIn profile.

How to access: LinkedIn Learning is free to members of the SMU community. You will need SMU credentials to access the tool and you may connect your LinkedIn profile.

SMU is an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, which provides training, mentoring, and supportive communities for faculty, postdocs, and graduate students. Once your membership is activated, you may want to click on "Resources" and navigate to the tile for "Graduate Students and Postdocs" for resources that are targeted to you.

How to access: Click the button below to navigate to the NCFDD login page and click "Activate My Membership." Complete your registration and confirm your email address to access the resources.

Learn more about this tool from the SMU Office of the Provost

SMU Network is a professional networking platform but created specifically for the SMU community. This tool can help you connect with SMU Mustangs past and present. Once you create your account, you can search by degree, location, or industry. You can also find alumni who are interested in being mentors and see job postings meant for SMU alumni.

How to access: Create an account by either registering your email address or connecting your existing LinkedIn account. Once your account is reviewed by the SMU Network team, you will receive a message in a few days welcoming you to the network.
