Danielle Avram Morgan Selected as 2015 Pollock Gallery Curatorial Fellow
Avram Morgan to manage exhibitions of works by students and established artists
Chair of SMU Meadows Division of Art Noah Simblist has appointed independent art curator Danielle Avram Morgan as the 2015 Pollock Curatorial Fellow for the school’s Pollock Gallery, located in the Hughes-Trigg Student Center on the SMU campus.
During her 12-month appointment as Pollock Curatorial Fellow, Avram Morgan will manage all elements of the Pollock Gallery’s exhibitions and public programs. The Pollock Gallery features approximately six exhibitions a year, including the annual B.F.A. and M.F.A. qualifying exhibitions.
The current exhibition, a mixed-media exhibit titled “soak stain bleed bloom” by alumna Kristen Cochran (M.F.A. ’10), was arranged by Simblist in coordination with Avram Morgan. Avram Morgan will organize the upcoming M.F.A. student show scheduled to open on April 2, and will work with Simblist in the coming months to program exhibitions for the rest of 2015.
Most recently, Avram Morgan co-curated the “Call and Response” video and film installation at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary (MAC) with SMU theatre alumnus Dee Mitchell (’73). “Call and Response” is part of the Video Association of Dallas’ Dallas Medianale 2015 and will be open until February 28.
Previously, Avram Morgan was manager of The Power Station art gallery in Dallas and was curatorial assistant for the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga. in its photography and modern and contemporary art departments.
She has participated as a portfolio reviewer for Photolucida (Portland, Ore.); Critical Mass (Portland); Slideluck Potshow (Dallas) and Atlanta Celebrates Photography (Atlanta). Her work has been discussed in articles in D Magazine “Front Row”; Paper City; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; and artMatters, among others. Avram Morgan has taught courses in photography at the University of Texas at Dallas and at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She holds an M.F.A. from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Dallas.
About the Pollock Gallery
The Pollock Gallery holds a significant and valuable academic role in the University’s learning environment in addition to playing a vital role in the Dallas/Fort Worth arts community. Exhibiting work by students and faculty members as well as emerging and established local, national and international artists, the gallery also serves as a platform for the dissemination of ideas and discourse related to historical, modern and contemporary art practices. Providing the Division of Art with an arena where connections critical to the educational process can develop and unfold, the Pollock Gallery functions as a hub that connects the studio classroom with contemporary arts practice and provides a place for the consideration of pedagogy, artistic production and meaning on a larger scale.
Over the years, the exhibitions and public programs organized by the gallery have provided visitors with opportunities to experience diverse works of art from a wide range of artists, time periods and perspectives. Engagement with other academic institutions and the public at large is achieved through the scholarly production of publications, gallery talks and symposia.
The Pollock Curatorial Fellowship was established in 2014 with the generous support of a gift from the estate of Shirley Pollock. This annual Fellowship brings in emerging curators from around the world to interact with the SMU and DFW community for one year.
The Pollock Gallery is located inside the Hughes-Trigg Student Center on the SMU campus at 3140 Dyer, Dallas, TX 75205.
The gallery is open to the public without charge Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Wednesdays and Sundays except by prior appointment.
