Lighting the Way to a Second Century

Lighting the Way to a Second Century

As part of the Second Century Celebration, commemorating the centennials of SMU's founding in 1911 and opening in 1915, SMU created the Centennial Lighting Project to provide permanent architectural lighting for the Armstrong Commons, the Laura Lee Blanton Student Services Building and historic Dallas Hall, as well as the SMU Mustang on Expressway Tower.

Lighting of the cupolas of Blanton Student Services Building and Armstrong Residential Commons began in September 2014, before the first home football game. Peruna first glowed on the side of Expressway Tower on SMU’s East Campus during Homecoming Weekend 2014. In 2015, the exterior of Blanton Student Services Building was added for Homecoming and — during the commemoration of the University’s 100th anniversary — SMU alumni gave the University the gift of lighting Dallas Hall nightly during SMU’s second century.

These new features symbolize SMU's proud heritage, its relationship with the wider community and its bright future as it enters its second century. SMU gratefully acknowledges the many alumni and friends who donated to this project.
