DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Police Department will undergo an accreditation assessment by a team of assessors from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). The assessment will begin on July 15, 2023, and will examine all aspects of SMU PD’s policy, procedures, management, operation, and support services.

This assessment is a voluntary process by SMU PD to verify adherence to IACLEA’s state-of-the-art standards. Accreditation through IACLEA is a highly prized recognition in campus public safety professional excellence. SMU PD has been accredited by IACLEA since 2013, was reaccredited in 2017 and is seeking to maintain that accreditation through this assessment.

University members, agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling 214-768-6460 on July 17, 2023, between the hours of 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Comments will be taken by the Assessment Team.

Telephone comments must address the department’s ability to comply with IACLEA standards. The IACLEA Accreditation Standards Manual is available on the IACLEA website at

"We are proud to have received accreditation from IACLEA. This recognition is a testament to our department s commitment to upholding policies recommended by IACLEA, and our demonstrated adherence to IACLEA standards. Our initial accreditation in 2013, followed by reaccreditation in 2017, both serve as evidence of our dedication to these policies. This consistency ensures the delivery of professional, service driven and community-oriented policing to our SMU community," SMU Police Chief Jim Walters said.

The Accreditation Manager for SMU PD is Lieutenant Rodney Irvin. The Assessment Team is composed of experienced campus law enforcement professionals from within the state of Texas. The assessors are Team Lead Peg Gant, IACLEA Lead Assessor, and team member Lieutenant Andy Huntington, Baylor University Police Department.
