SMU community to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. with unity circle

Jan. 27 ceremony, ‘Dream Week,’ honors civil rights leader as students begin spring semester studies

DALLAS (SMU) – SMU President R. Gerald Turner, students, faculty and staff will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Unity Circle from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at the university flagpole. By tradition SMU honors King with Dream Week to coincide with the return of students to campus for the spring semester, usually the week after the traditional observance of MLK Day.

 

During the event, Turner and campus leaders will speak briefly about King’s leadership and impact. The Unity Circle also will feature performances and students sharing their thoughts about the significance of Dr. King’s legacy.

 

The Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement also will host a day of service volunteer activity for students, faculty and staff from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26.  Participants will pack donated essential items for The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center in room 218A of the Hughes-Trigg Student Center, 3140 Dyer St. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to sign-up to reserve a time slot.
