Module 3: Working @ SMU
Familiarize yourself with the systems, policies and programs SMU has created to support you during your employment with the University.
We all have a big part to play in helping to ensure that SMU remains a great place to work. The Department of Human Resources partners with the Office of Risk Management, the Office of Institutional Access and Equity, SMU Police Department and Office of Information Technology to support a work environment where all employees may thrive and do their best work. This module will help you understand what is expected of you as an SMU employee.
The University Policy Manual is intended to inform the University's various constituencies regarding the subject matter addressed in the policies. Employees are responsible for familiarizing themselves with these policies.

Knowing how to respond appropriate to emergencies and accidents in the workplace is essential.
In the event of a campus emergency, it is vital that SMU students, faculty and staff know what to do. Common sense, opportunity, and personal experience all play a part in responding to emergencies. But whether the threat is fire, a weather emergency or an active shooter, preparation for the three critical responses - evacuate, seek shelter, and lockdown - will be applicable in most emergency situations.

SMU's Emergency Notification System consists of many different modes of communication, because no single method can reach every person, every time. Once a potential threat is identified and until it is resolved, SMU will communicate with you using one or more of these methods:
- Cell calls, text messages, and emails
- Social Media - Twitter/Facebook
- Public Address Systems in buildings and from police vehicles
- Outdoor sirens
- Computer pop-up messages on SMU-owned computers
Timely and specific performance feedback, coupled with a coaching relationship will build the confidence, skill, and experience of your team members.
Ongoing Performance Management to include Goal Setting, Mid-Year Review and Annual Performance Review: Employees feedback throughout the year culminating in an annual performance review, which summarizes the year. The Annual Review process takes place in the fall semester, from mid-September to mid-December.
Starting off on the right foot is the key to your success at SMU.
