Innovation and entrepreneurship: turning ideas into careers

Dallas has always been a city of innovators. Through SMU's Big iDeas program, students can take part in pitch competitions and gain mentorships through professional networks to prepare for their careers.

Developing entrepreneurs

Sponsored by SMU’s Office of Engaged Learning, the Big iDeas program hosts pitch competitions and provides training and coaching for entrepreneurial projects. Undergraduate students of any major are welcome to participate. Startup pitches span a variety of industries, including arts, consumer products, consulting, education, technology and more.

The Office of Engaged Learning encourages entrepreneurial pursuits and helps connect students with mentors and other entrepreneurs from the Dallas area and beyond.

Industries that hire SMU graduates

Students pursue internships and full‑time roles in these sectors: health care, sports, energy, finance, technology and more. The nation’s fourth largest metropolitan area is home to a diverse mix of industries, driving economic growth and employment opportunities and propelling many of our graduates into prominent leadership positions in the area and beyond.

When SMU students look for internships and jobs, they are doing so in a city that sets them up for success. The Dallas-Fort Worth area offers:

  • 20-plus Fortune 500 companies in the region
  • A city for tech professionals (CompTIA)
  • One of the Best Places to Start a Career (Wallethub 2025)
  • 64,000-plus alumni in Dallas-Fort Worth
