Michael Hahsler

Dr. Michael Hahsler, assistant professor in SMU-Lyle’s Department of Engineering Management, Information, and Systems (EMIS) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering by courtesy, has been appointed to a three-year term as adjunct assistant professor, a volunteer faculty position, in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UT Southwestern), Dallas, Texas. In his role, Dr. Hahsler joins a team of distinguished investigators to develop predictive models for Type 2 diabetes identification and prevention:  Dr. Vishal Ahuja, assistant professor of information technology and operations management at SMU’s Cox School of Business; and Dr. Michael Bowen, assistant professor of internal medicine, pediatrics, and clinical sciences at UT Southwestern.

“At SMU-Lyle we strongly value our faculty working on impactful, real-world problems,” said Dean Marc P. Christensen. ” This appointment at a prestigious institution like UT Southwestern is an indication of Professor Hahsler’s importance in the field.”

Diabetes, affecting roughly 8% of the adult population worldwide, is a leading cause of severe health complications and health care costs. “Being able to develop predictive models to identify high-risk individuals, formulate an optimal screening strategy, and trace the development of diabetes in patient populations by mining clinical patient data from electronic medical records (EMR) at a large health care system, is the goal of our collaborative research,” noted Dr. Hahsler. “With the ability to prescribe chronic disease management based upon predictive analytics, primary care providers (PCP) can make informed decisions, anticipating the onset of diabetes, preventing its development in adults, and recommending optimal treatments and timely interventions for those burdened by its costs, complications, and cross-cultural comorbidities.”

Dr. Hahsler received both his M.S. and Ph.D. from Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, Austria.
