In its Dec. 22, 2016, edition, The Preston Hollow People newspaper announced their selection of SMU police officers involved in the search for and eventual recovery of the remains of fellow officer Mark McCullers as their "newsmakers of the year."

McCullers was swept into Turtle Creek and drowned in July 2016 near the Fitzhugh Avenue bridge. Conditions were such that his remains were not found for several weeks, despite diligent efforts by officers and volunteers from various police agencies, including the SMU Police Department.

"The determination and perseverance of SMU police officers merited their salute as People Newspapers’ 2016 newsmakers of the year. They were selected for their collective dedication and efforts and also as representatives of the hundreds of volunteers and public safety personnel who participated in the massive search," The Preston Hollow People newspaper wrote.
