Borrowing

Checking Out Items

Show your ID card at the service desk. You will be provided instructions on how to check out items.

 

Delivery Options

  • All borrowers can request service desk pickup, curbside pickup or locker pickup. 
  • SMU students, faculty, and staff can choose home delivery.

Curbside Pickup

  1. Place items on hold in Library Search (see instructions).
  2. You will receive a notification email within two business days that your items are ready for pickup.
  3. Make an appointment for pickup using the link in your notification email.
  4. Pick up your items at the owning library.  Return them to any SMU Libraries book drop box, or ship them to the owning library.

Locker Pickup

Hamon Arts Library items only

  1. Place items on hold in Library Search (see instructions).
  2. You will receive a notification email when the items are on hold.
  3. Follow the instructions in your notification email to request locker pickup. You will be notified when the items are in the locker.
  4. Pick up your items from the assigned locker, located just outside the Hamon Arts Library inside the Owen Arts Center.  Return them to any SMU Libraries book drop box, or ship them to the Library.

Home Delivery

Available outside of Dallas and Collin Counties. Any person who requires a reasonable accommodation on the basis of a disability and are in need of home delivery in Dallas or Collin Counties should contact your library to arrange for the accommodation.

  1. Request items in Library Search.
  2. Select Personal Delivery: Home Address.
  3. You will receive a notification email within 48 hours.  You must reply to confirm or correct your shipping address.  
  4. Your items will be shipped and will typically arrive 7-10 days later. By requesting this service, you assume liability for any shipping loss. 
  5. Return items to any SMU Libraries book drop box, or ship them using the prepaid address label enclosed. 

 

Returns

  • Return borrowed books and media at any service desk or book drop box
  • Return borrowed equipment to the service desk where it was checked out.   
  • Graduating students must return all borrowed items by the last day of final exams. If you are not in the Dallas area, you can ship them to us.

SMU Affiliates

Visiting scholars, adjunct faculty, and some temporary employees and contractors are eligible for a Library Research Card.  A request must be made by a department chair, a dean, or the provost.

TexShare

The statewide TexShare Card Program enables borrowing at any of the more than 500 participating libraries.
