Willie Baronet is the former owner and Creative Director of the advertising firm, GroupBaronet. In 2006, he sold the company, went back to grad school to earn an MFA in Arts & Technology (UTD) and now teaches Advertising Design at SMU, where he has been recognized with the prestigious “M” award, the highest recognition bestowed upon students, faculty, staff and administrators on the SMU Campus. Honorees are an inspiration to others, giving unselfishly of their time and talents in order to make the University, and indeed the world, a better place.

In 1993, internal wrestling with how to respond to individuals on the streets asking for help prompted Willie to begin buying homeless signs. His collection has morphed into a personal art project called WE ARE ALL HOMELESS. To date, Willie has bought over 2,000 signs and created over 75 art installations across the US and UK that serve to raise awareness about homelessness. In 2014, Willie and a film crew drove from Seattle to San Diego to New York, buying signs in 22 cities along the way, and interviewing more than 100 people on the streets. This trip is the subject of the award winning documentary, SIGNS OF HUMANITY (available on Amazon Prime). The project has been featured in international media including NPR-All Things Considered, HuffPost, BuzzFeed and Al Jazeera. An UpWorthy video about the film has been viewed over 6.5 million times. Today, Willie continues to share WE ARE ALL HOMELESS as an artist, speaker and workshop facilitator. From the TEDx stage to kindergarten classrooms, he challenges all who encounter the project to contemplate the question, "What is home?" Willie lives in Dallas, Texas with his partner, Tanya. They have two cats, Marcel and Myrna.

A graduate of Texas Christian University’s Bob Schieffer College of Communication, Krys began her career as a journalist along the U.S./Mexico border and returned to North Texas in 1999 to serve as News Director for Broadcast.com, and later Senior Producer of Broadcast News at Yahoo. Krys joined KERA in 2001, hosting the nightly radio talk show "Conversations." Later, she wrote and produced documentary and educational television programs, including the critically-acclaimed, nationally broadcast "JFK: Breaking the News" in 2003, and served as producer and co-host of the Emmy Award-winning public affairs program "On The Record." She also hosted a weekly television version of "Think" from 2007-2011.

In these positions, he leads and oversees the program’s curriculum, faculty, internships, operations, and industry engagement. Davis has written for magazines and newspapers for over 25 years. She served as assistant managing editor of the Chicago-based “ABA Journal,” the nation's most-read legal magazine, worked as both a senior reporter and an assistant editor at Texas Lawyer newspaper, and spent eight years as the editor and fashion editor of Indulge magazine, the luxury lifestyle magazine of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Her freelance writing and styling credits include USA Weekend, Travel + Leisure, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun Times, The Christian Science Monitor, Fodor’s Travel Guide, Virtuoso Life and many more. She also styles notable people like musicians and athletes; most recently, she styled Nashville singer/songwriter Rico del Oro for the release of his 2023 album “Toro” and for his single, “Twin Souls.”

Among the many awards she’s received for her work are a 2021 “Azbee” National Silver Award for Print Feature from the American Society of Business Publication Editors, two Lisagor Awards for feature writing from the Chicago chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a Katie award from the Dallas Press Club for feature writing and an ASCAP writing award.

Throughout her career, she has attended New York Fashion Week every year since 2007, explained Enron, edited celebrity stylist Clinton Kelly, patrolled the Rio Grande with border agents, styled an Olympic athlete, traveled on slow boats in China, eaten reindeer in Finland and hiked to hidden temples in Kuala Lumpur.

Her personal style has been photographed by the legendary Bill Cunningham for the New York Times and has been featured on NYLON.com and in other media outlets. As an officially certified Star Wars cosplayer, she has performed at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago and London and has appeared on the Disney Channel in Europe and in numerous publications.

Davis also has been involved in the fashion industry as an entrepreneur. She has launched two niche fashion lines, earning a stint as a Macy’s Emerging Designer and a write-up in the New York Times.

Currently, Davis writes a column for the “ABA Journal,” regularly writes and styles fashion shoots for 360 West magazine and works as a freelance fashion stylist for such clients as the Dallas Market Center. She also occasionally works as a fashion show dresser through the Kim Dawson Agency.

Topic: Teaching with Original Objects - Why university special collections matter

Amanda W. Dotseth is the director of the Meadows Museum at SMU. She previously served as assistant curator at the museum from 2006 to 2009 and returned as curator in 2018. She completed her Ph.D. on Romanesque Architecture at the Courtauld Institute of Art in 2015 and has held fellowships with Fulbright, Mellon and the Spanish National Research Council. Her research focuses on Spain’s Middle Ages but has addressed a wide range of topics, including European old master painting, medieval treasuries, and collecting history.

She is currently an associated scholar in the project "The Medieval Iberian Treasury in Context: Collections, Connections, and Representations on the Peninsula and Beyond," and a short-term collaborator on the ERC-funded project "Petrifying Wealth. The Southern European Shift to Masonry as Collective Investment in Identity, c.1050-1300." She has contributed to a number of exhibitions at the Meadows Museums including, "Fernando Gallego and His Workshop: The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo," "Zurbarán: Jacob and His Twelve Sons," and "El Greco, Goya, and a Taste for Spain: Highlights from the Bowes Museum." Current and upcoming projects include the art of medieval pilgrimage in Spain, and an edited volume published by Brepols called "Collective Display: Medieval Art out of Isolation" (forthcoming).

Anthony Elia is the director of Bridwell Library and associate dean for Special Collections and Academic Publishing. At Bridwell he has overseen the acquisitions of various historical theology collections including the World Methodist Museum, archives from the United Methodist Publishing House, and the Upper Room. He is interested in the histories of paper, printmaking, typography, ink, calligraphy, and books.  Looking at East and Central Asia, where the paper trade coincided with the emergence and flourishing of new schools of thought, he will recount the curious histories of the paper and print world leading up to the Gutenberg revolution in the 15th century.  More info

Hollie Gardner is the founder of Gardner AI Insights, a company focused on teaching about artificial intelligence (AI), designing AI applications, and offering data science services. She is committed to helping people understand AI and use it responsibly in their work, which includes running workshops and personal coaching to help integrate AI tools into regular business tasks, improving productivity. 

read more Alongside her entrepreneurial endeavors, she is a lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin's Center for Integrated Design, teaching the undergraduate course ITD 111: Introduction to Design for AI. Additionally, Hollie is a strategy and AI consultant for transform.forward, a higher education consultancy firm.

Previously, Hollie dedicated ten years to the SMU Libraries as a librarian, where she honed her skills in strategy, user experience design, and information literacy instruction. Her educational background is as diverse as her career, holding a master’s in Data Science from SMU, complemented by a master’s in Library Science and a bachelor’s in Music, both from the University of North Texas.

Rick Hart was named SMU's Director of Athletics on July 16, 2012, and during his time on the Hilltop, SMU student-athletes have excelled in the classroom and in competition, with 69% earning cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher, over one-third boasting GPAs of 3.5 or better and 91% earning degrees. During Hart’s time at SMU, over 1,500 degrees have been conferred on Mustang student-athletes. SMU has also experienced broad success athletically over his tenure, winning 42 team conference titles across 16 sports, with all Mustang sports advancing to the post-season at least once since 2017.

read more His work has also paved the path for future success, as SMU accepted a bid to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the top three collegiate athletic conferences in America, on July 1, 2024.

Hart served as NACDA President for the 2022-23 membership year and frequently serves as a speaker and committee member for various athletic organizations. Hart came to SMU after six years as A.D. at Tennessee at Chattanooga and seven years at Oklahoma in various athletics administrative capacities, ending as the Senior Associate Athletics Director.

A graduate of UNC, Hart and his wife, Allison, also a graduate of North Carolina, are proud parents of Trevor, an SMU grad and Assistant Director of Marketing and Fan Engagement at Northwestern, and Caroline (Carly), an SMU junior.

A third-generation athletics administrator, Hart's father, Dave, served as Director of Athletics at Tennessee, Florida State and East Carolina, and his late grandfather, Dave Sr., served in a variety of roles within collegiate athletics including stints as a Coach, Athletics Director and Conference Commissioner.

John Leake was born and raised in Dallas and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1989. He studied history and political philosophy with Roger Scruton at Boston University, and went to Vienna, Austria on a graduate school scholarship. He ended up living in Vienna for over a decade, working as a freelance writer and translator. His first book, "Entering Hades: The Double Life of a Serial Killer" (Sarah Crichton Books, FSG) was a New York Times Sunday Book Review "Editors' Choice," a Men's Vogue "Best Book of 2007," and the inspiration of "The Infernal Comedy," starring John Malkovich. 

read more His second book, "Cold a Long Time: An Alpine Mystery," was winner of the 2012 Independent Publisher Award. The German translation, "Eiskalter Tod," published by the Residenz Verlag was a bestseller in Austria.

After moving back to Dallas in 2020, he co-wrote (with Dr. Peter McCullough) "The Courage to Face COVID-19: Preventing Hospitalization and Death While Battling the Bio-Pharmaceutical Complex" (with a forward by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.).

His most recent book, "The Meaning of Malice: On the Trail of the Black Widow of Highland Park," details the life and crimes of a notorious Dallas socialite in the seventies and early eighties named Sandra Bridewell.

Esteban Mariel leads City Futsal as co-founder and President. He is an experienced owner with a demonstrated history of working in the sports industry and has strong entrepreneur professional skills in customer service, coaching, business development, strategic planning, and event management. He also oversees the company's ongoing expansion efforts into other emerging markets.

Manuel Mariel is a co-founder and the Vice President of Operations at City Futsal. He has a strong background in planning, designing, implementing, executing, and evaluating sports programming. He is responsible for overseeing the company's operational efficiencies within the sales and marketing teams and the future development of facilities.

In his previous role with City Futsal, Esteban he served as Programs Director of player development. In 2012 he was responsible for establishing the first futsal/ soccer school in DFW with over 450 students and managing a staff of twelve coaches and trainers. He oversaw the delegation of all programs both on the court and field. The program went on to win multiple regional, national, and international titles across the US and Spain. In 2013, he created the first international exchange program with Santos FC, a world-renowned Brazilian soccer club, bringing American soccer players and families to Brazil to experience the culture.

Before his venture into City Futsal, Esteban worked with Red Bull America to establish the Neymar 5 tournament in the Texas Region. He built and managed large events in Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston. He grew the Texas market into the largest and most successful regional tournaments in the United States, competing with California, Chicago, Florida, and New York.

While in City Futsal, Esteban has led the company from operating out of two indoor arenas to their new City Futsal Park in the Downtown Dallas Farmers Market District. He oversees all fiduciary responsibilities in the company with a strong understanding of accounting and finance. He also holds a real estate license in the state of Texas, providing advisory and consulting services to City Futsal and future expansion projects.

Esteban holds a BA in economics from Southern Methodist University, a national D license in US Soccer, and his National US Youth license.

In his previous role with City Futsal, Manuel served as Coordinating Director of player development. he was responsible for managing logistics for over 450 students across 12 different surfaces and 12 employees. He oversaw all programming budgets and resources used for local, regional, national, and international competitions. He successfully planned all training program campaigns that went on to win multiple regional, national, and international titles across the US and Spain. Before his involvement in City Futsal, Manuel managed the Texas Region Neymar Tournament for Red Bull America, coordinating the US's largest Red Bull soccer tournaments. For three years, he successfully grew DFW, Houston, and San Antonio into the top programs in the US, with over 1000 teams and 4000 players. He continued to play a key role in strategic partnerships with local stores, vendors, and venues throughout the Texas region, ensuring efficiencies in response to an increasingly demanding adult soccer market. During his time at City Futsal, Manuel successfully transitioned the company's on-court training program into an online platform called Ball Method. Building an onsite studio to house online classes for youth and adults to continue their athletic development. He led the program by preparing all classes and material for shooting live and OnDemand content to be sold to the public through a subscription-based platform to the public.

Manuel has most recently served as Vice President of Operations, focusing his efforts on training employees in skills training, leadership training, customer service training, and sales. He has built efficiencies throughout the team and operation, leading the company to develop more facilities as a viable strategic plan for its future.

Manuel earned a BA in economics at Southern Methodist University and holds a national D license with US Soccer.

Burk Murchison was born and raised in Dallas and continues to live here with his wife Elise. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and currently is a partner with his brother Robert in Murchison Capital Partners, L.P., a private equity investment partnership, which the two established in 1992. Murchison has rooted for the Cowboys since their founding in 1960 and remains a loyal fan despite the team’s failure to qualify for the Super Bowl for the past 28 seasons and counting.

Michael Granberry was born and grew up in Dallas. He graduated from Samuell High School in Pleasant Grove in 1970 and from Southern Methodist University in 1974. He is an alumnus of the SMU Daily Campus, having served as sports editor, associate editor and editor-in-chief (fall 1973) before graduating. Between his junior and senior years, he interned at The Washington Post during "the Watergate summer" of 1973. He spent 19 years at the Los Angeles Times before returning to Dallas in 1997 to work for his hometown newspaper, The Dallas Morning News, where he had earlier worked as a Sunday magazine feature writer from 1976 to 1978. He retired from The News on January 1 of this year, 54 years after his first byline appeared in the Dallas Times Herald in 1969. He and his wife, Nancy Churnin, a bestselling children’s book author, live in West Plano, with two cats and a dog named Dog.

Matthew B. Myers is the ninth dean of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University (SMU Cox) in Dallas, Texas, where he holds the Tolleson Chair in Business Leadership and is also the David B. Miller Endowed Professor in Business. SMU Cox offers undergraduate and graduate degrees to about 2,500 students annually, with a global alumni network of almost 42,000. The Cox School has an endowment of over $330m and is in the midst of a $140m renovation and expansion project set to open in 2024 in the heart of the SMU campus.

Prior to his arrival at SMU Cox in 2017, Myers served as Dean and Mitchell P. Rales Chair at the Farmer School of Business, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. While at Miami, the Farmer School received the largest private donation to date in the 200-year campus history, a $40m second-generational gift from the Farmer family.

Myers has worked and consulted with organizations in the engineering, distribution, chemical, insurance, financial services, agriculture, and pharma industries. He has served as visiting faculty at ESSEC-Paris and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, has taught at the Vienna University of Economics and in other locations including Italy, Romania, Taiwan, and Uzbekistan, and has led executive education courses worldwide. Before entering academia, Myers worked at both Merrill Lynch and IBM Argentina. He is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Additionally, he serves on the boards of King Ranch, Inc. (Chair-Audit), the Maguire Energy Institute, the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking, the Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center, Goodwill Industries of Dallas, and the BaylorScott&White Dallas Foundation. He also served as an advisory council member for the George W. Bush Institute's Economic Growth Initiative. He has been cited or appeared on CNBC, Fox Business, CBS Radio, the Financial Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

An outdoor enthusiast, Myers is involved in several wildlife conservation organizations and is on the board of directors of the Peregrine Fund. He has teamed with thoroughbred racing photographer Sam English on short stories and photo essays about the outdoors, with their work appearing in Gray's Sporting Journal.

Myers received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University and a Master of International Business Studies degree from the University of South Carolina. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army Airborne from 1979 to 1982, primarily in Panama. Myers, his wife Gina, and their twin daughters live in Dallas.

His latest book, "Texas Loud, Proud, and Brash, How Ten Mavericks Created the Twentieth-Century Lone Star State" (Rowman & Littlefield, 2023) gives even non-Texans a reason to laugh at us and with us. "Deadly Dallas: A History of Unfortunate Incidents and Grisly Fatalities" (The History Press, 2021) has been recommended as a “must-read for anyone who approaches Dallas history with a sense of humor, however dark.”

Robert Wilonsky, a Dallas native (and son of an SMU Mustang), spent 30 years in Dallas journalism -- at the Dallas Times Herald, the Dallas Observer and The Dallas Morning News, where he covered everything from City Hall to pop music to sports. Until March 2020, the UT-Austin graduate was the City Columnist at The News, where he is still a contributor, before departing to become director of communications at Heritage Auctions, where he gets to combine all his passions into a single gig. Occasionally he thinks about running for the Dallas City Council, at least until he comes to his senses.

Topic: Photographing War, Sports and the White House

David Woo retired from the Dallas Morning News on May 1, 2018 after a successful career as a staff photographer for over 42 years in a city he loved. He graduated from The University of Texas in Austin in 1976 with a BJ degree in photojournalism and was hired at the young age of 23. His first assignment for the newspaper on January 19, 1976, was covering the Dallas Cowboys returning from the Super Bowl to Dallas Love Field. His last, was covering the Dallas Cowboys with Charlotte Jones Anderson during the NFL Draft at AT&T Stadium.

read more In 1984, David was a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in Feature Photography for his coverage of the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua. In 1986, David was also the runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize for News Photography for the coverage of the Mexico City earthquake with fellow photographers Richard Pruitt and Juan Garcia. In 2006 Woo was on the photography staff at the newspaper that won the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

Richard and David’s first book, “Texas Women” was published in 1984 and they followed up with “Top Dogs and Their Pets” in 2009. Both books were a big success.

David was recently recognized by the Press Club of Dallas in fall of 2018 and received the prestigious North Texas Legend Award for his photography work at the Dallas Morning News.

His new book, “WOO! The Decisive Moment,” is a stirring compendium of his work. It is a stunning array of images that showcase David’s extraordinary ability to encapsulate the essence of a moment in his photography. The images were shot between 1976 and 2018, including 42 years as a Pulitzer-winning photographer at the paper, and span a wide range of subjects and styles, displaying the breadth and depth of David’s talent.
