After admission
Congratulations on being admitted as a transfer student to SMU! You may find it helpful to download and print our New Student Checklist to make sure you stay on track. Below are your next steps to get ready for life on the Hilltop:
Activate your Student Account and Email
Activate your my.SMU account using the SMU ID that is emailed typically two to three days after receiving your decision. Then, set up your SMU email account.
Review your Transfer Evaluation Report
You will receive an email with instructions on accessing your report within my.SMU three to four days after you receive your admission decision. (Note: This video tutorial explains what is included in your report and how your credits are transferring.)
Explore financial aid
Three out of four undergraduates receive financial aid through a merit-based award, grant, or need-based assistance. To maximize your opportunities, make sure to complete both the FAFSA and CSS Profile. Don't forget to check your SMU email regularly for important updates.
Visit the campus
Attend a Transfer Tour to get a better feel for life on campus. You will receive additional information about events for admitted students in your SMU email.
Accept your offer and reserve your place
To reserve your place at SMU, pay your nonrefundable $700 Orientation and Matriculation deposit at smu.edu/deposit. Note: Incoming transfer students are not required to live on campus but may apply to be considered for housing. Transfer students seeking on-campus housing are considered on a space-available basis with a priority application date of June 15 for Fall and December 1 for Spring. If you are applying to live on campus, you must pay an additional $100 housing deposit.
Turn in your Statements of Good Standing and final college transcripts
Submit a Statement of Good Standing Form for each college/university you have previously attended. This document must be completed by the Dean of Students or another college official with access to disciplinary and academic records. Please use a separate form for each institution.
Submit AP or IB Scores
If you've taken AP or IB exams, be sure to send your official scores to SMU so we can review them for possible credit.
- AP: Sign in to your College Board account, select Send AP Scores, and follow the steps to send them to Southern Methodist University.
- IB: Request your scores through the International Baccalaureate organization.
Submit the health history form
Before registering for classes, all SMU students must complete and submit health center requirements. Note: Texas law requires that all students under the age of 22 receive the meningitis vaccine or a booster shot within the preceding five years.
Prepare for Orientation
Orientation at SMU is a three-step process. Mustang StartUp is our virtual orientation experience that includes our Campus Life modules, pre-advising Canvas course, and academic advising and registration. Stampede is our extended orientation process that occurs the first few days before the start of the semester, followed by Post-Orientation Programming to help ensure a smooth transition to SMU.
