On Monday night in Los Angeles, actress Kathy Bates accepted the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her role in FX’s American Horror Story: Coven.

“I have to thank everybody who had anything to do with our show. Last season was awesome, this season’s gonna be great,” she said in her acceptance speech. “Our crew in New Orleans worked grueling hours to bring this wonderful show to light. This is for them. Thank you so very much.”

Bates, a winner of numerous awards for her skills as an actress, graduated from SMU's Meadows School of the Arts in 1969. For her exemplary contribution to the art and craft of acting, and for the pleasures she has given countless theater, television, and film audiences, SMU conferred upon Kathy Bates the degree of Doctor of Arts, honoris causa, in 2002. She also gave the commencement address that year.
