ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith DALLAS (SMU)— ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith will be the featured speaker for SMU’s Black History Month 2014. The theme for the month, organized by the Association of Black Students, is “Reflecting On Our Past. Embracing Our Future.” It will feature an educational game night, a discussion on identity, a gospel concert and a gala.

Black History Month Keynote Lecture: ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith

6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9
Hughes Trigg Student Center Theater

The annual opening lecture will feature ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith. He will discuss the history and the future of African Americans. The evening also will include a question and answer session and autographs.

What’s in the name? “Black” American or “African” American?

Hughes Trigg Student Center Forum

Is lumping everyone together as African Americans the best way to describe a community? Is using “black” fraught with other kinds of pitfalls? What’s your take? Join the discussion and discover if labels matter.

Gospel Music in America: History in Song

7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23
Hughes Trigg Student Center Varsity

The program will provide a history of gospel music in America. The choir will sing songs that are emblematic of the gospel music genre, ranging from slavery to current gospel movements.

Progression of the Black Woman

6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27
Hughes Trigg Student Center Forum

This program examines the evolution of black women from slavery through the 21st century.

Third Annual Black Excellence Ball, History Makers & Scholarship Reception

6 p.m. Saturday, March 1

Attire: Black tie optional

The reception will honor the Black Alumni of SMU’s 2014 History Makers and celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans. The program includes Pastor Richie Butler of SMU Board of Trustees, jazz music, gospel melodies and an awards presentation. Student RSVP. Alumni and guests RSVP.
