SMU plans Family Day for young artists and athletes

DALLAS (SMU) – Don’t expect to hear any whining at SMU’s Family Day on April 20th, as activities are planned for every childhood interest.
From creating glittering Venetian carnival masks to competing in an official NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition, activities will appeal to even the most fickle participant.
Young sports fans can sample an SMU Mustang football practice and meet current players, Mustangs in the NFL and Coach June Jones at the Mustang Fan Fair at the Pettus Practice Field adjacent to Meadows Museum. Kids aged 6 through eighth grade also may compete in an official NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
At Meadows Museum, young artists will search for European landmarks on a scavenger hunt through the museum exhibit “Impressions of Europe: 19th-Century Vistas by Martín Rico.” Like Rico, they will paint landscapes en plein air, or on location at the Meadows Museum plaza. Venice was Rico’s favorite city, so the dancers of I Colori and strolling musicians will set the mood. Take Italian lessons on the museum lawn, make a Venetian carnival mask and sample Italian gelato. A variety of food trucks will be present.

Activities: Meet current SMU Mustang football players, Coach June Jones and Mustangs who have gone pro: Pittsburgh Steelers Kelvin Beachum and Emmanuel Sanders; Dallas Cowboy Sterling Moore; Washington Redskin Aldrick Robinson; and former San Diego Chargers’ player Louie Kelcher. In addition, Lance McIlhenny, quarterback of SMU’s Pony Express, will be on hand.
Compete in an official NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Bring a birth certificate and wear soft-soled gym shoes for the free competition. Each participant gets the opportunity for one punt, one pass and one kick. The individual scores are added together for a final total score. The top finisher in each age group advances to the sectional competition.
