SMU alumnus Jim Johnston to receive
the 2011 Silver Anniversary Mustang Award

SMU alumnus Jim Johnston will be honored with the 2011 Silver Anniversary Mustang Award at halftime of the Jan. 28 men's basketball game against Tulsa.

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU alumnus Jim Johnston will be honored with the 2011 Silver Anniversary Mustang Award at halftime of the January 28 men's basketball game against Tulsa.

Johnston lettered in football at SMU in 1966, 1968 and 1969. A standout defensive tackle, Johnston was a key component in the 1968 Bluebonnet Bowl victory over Oklahoma.

Johnston earned a BBA Degree in 1970 and an MBA Degree in 1971 from SMU while serving as a Graduate Assistant Coach for the football team. Since graduation, Johnston has remained involved on the Hilltop, having served as Chairman of the Board for the Mustang Club, the Lettermen's Association, the Planned Giving Counsel and the Athletics Hall of Fame.

Away from the Hilltop, Johnston has had a 40-year career in Dallas banking, starting as a trainee with Republic Bank Dallas, and later serving as Regional Chairman of Frost Bank and Vice Chairman of Bank of Texas. During this time, he started looking for ways to make an impact in his community and continue his support and service of SMU. Johnston has served as Chairman of the Board for both Goodwill Industries of Dallas and the Arthritis Foundation of North Texas and served on the Board for the Boy Scouts/Circle Ten Council and the Salesmanship Club of Dallas, among others.

The annual award, which was initiated in 1991, is the most prestigious award given by the Lettermen's Association. To be selected as the SAM Award winner, an individual must have graduated from SMU at least 25 years ago and have made significant, positive and lasting impact on his/her community.
