Daily Mustang and SMU-TV

Student journalists with The SMU Daily Mustang and SMU-TV have been selected for four Society of Professional Journalists Region 8 Mark of Excellence Awards, a contest which covers all four-year universities in Texas and Oklahoma.

Whether they won first, second or third place in each category will be announced at the Region 8 conference in Norman, Okla., on April 8 and 9.

SMU's winning entries include:

  • Best Affiliated Web Site (SMU Daily Mustang staff; Aida Ahmed, managing editor)
  • Online In-Depth Reporting (Ariana Garza, Lisa McKeague, E'Lyn Taylor and Kassi Schmitt; SMU Daily Mustang; “Dallas Votes: Are 'Dry' Neighborhoods On Their Way Out?”)
  • Online News Reporting (SMU Daily Mustang and The Daily Campus; “NOLA Now”)
  • Television General News Reporting (Bridget Bennett; SMU-TV, “County Jail Health Crisis?”)

The in-depth package, which previewed the Nov. 2 wet/dry elections, was a product of Jayne Suhler’s “Beyond the Bubble” project for Reporting 2 and included a stand-up video segment that Kassi Schmitt produced for Lucy Scott’s Broadcast 2 class.

The NOLA Now project, during which students traveled to New Orleans to cover the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, also was a product of Lucy Scott’s Broadcast 2 class and was bolstered by collaboration between the Daily Mustang and Daily Campus. Bridget Bennett’s award-winning package was produced for Pam Harris’ Broadcast 1 class.

FORT WORTH (April 3, 2011) – SMU’s independent student newspaper The Daily Campus and Rotunda yearbook were recognized with a combined 31 awards for journalistic excellence in 2010-2011, officials with the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) announced Saturday at the group’s annual conference in Fort Worth.

The awards were highlighted by The Daily Campus’ first-place finish in overall excellence among Division 1 newspapers (newspapers published three or more times per week). The Daily Campus earned the distinction over daily student newspapers at Texas colleges and universities including UT-Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of North Texas and others.

Four Daily Campus student staffers competed in live, on-site journalism competitions that included a first-place finish by current Daily Campus editor-in-chief Taylor Adams in the print news writing event and a third-place finish by former editor-in-chief Jessica Huseman in feature writing. Adams also earned third-place honors in the copy editing competition.
