The Justices will begin hearing arguments at 9 a.m. in the first floor Hillcrest Appellate Courtroom and Classroom of the Underwood Law Library.

All seats in the main room have been reserved, but a live feed of the proceedings will be simulcast in Underwood’s Walsh Classroom, also on the first floor.  In addition, St. Mary’s University will provide a live Web cast of the proceedings at http://www.stmarytx.edu/law/webcasts/?go=live.

The cases to be presented are:

  • Entergy Gulf States, Inc. v. Summers,
    out of Jefferson County
  • TXI Transportation Co., et al. v. Hughes, et al,
    out of Wise County
  • City of Dallas v. Abbot,
    out of Travis County

The Entergy case is the focus of intense, statewide interest. The Supreme Court of Texas agreed to re-hear the case after the court’s decision in late August drew widespread criticism for expanding legal immunity for owners of worksites. The original court decision allows the owner of a business to be considered the general contractor for work done on the business property, opening a loophole for business owners who buy a certain type of workers' compensation insurance to prevent temporary employees from suing for injuries.
