Bridwell Institute @ Cox

The Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom is a research institute in the SMU Cox School of Business.

The Institute was established in 2020 with the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Tucker Bridwell (BBA ’73, MBA ’74). The Bridwell Institute continues and expands upon the mission of its predecessor, the William J. O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom.

Mission

The mission of the Bridwell Institute is to study the nature, consequences, and causes of economic freedom.

2023-24 Annual Report

Between June 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024, the Bridwell Institute updated the indexes that measure economic freedom for nations, states, and metropolitan areas.  These datasets drove much of our scholarly output.  The annual report also highlights the institute’s educational initiatives – the 131 SMU students our reading groups and the nearly 2,100 teachers in our program to improve young people’s economic literacy. Our public events included two speeches, two Texas Economic Forums, and the event highlighted by the cover photograph – our Women and Economic Freedom project.
