Biographical Note:

During the decision to surge forces in Iraq, General John Abizaid (United States Army) served as commander of United States Central Command (2003-2007). General Abizaid was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry upon his graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1973. Prior to his role at Central Command, he served throughout the world during peacetime and war, including in Grenada, Italy, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Germany. Long considered a reliable voice in international matters, particularly in the Middle East, Abizaid has also served in diplomatic roles in Ukraine and Saudi Arabia.
