Full-Time Graduate Programs: International Applicants
Find Yourself in a Diverse, Global Graduate Business Community
SMU Cox is home to a vibrant and diverse community of graduate students from around the world. International students bring unique perspectives, experiences, and insights that enrich classroom discussions, foster cross-cultural collaboration, and strengthen the learning experience across our full-time graduate programs.
Our global network extends well beyond campus. With more than 42,000 alumni and a presence in over 30 countries, SMU Cox offers connections that support students throughout their academic journey and beyond.
International students can expect dedicated support before they arrive on campus and throughout their time at SMU Cox. Our goal is to help every student navigate their graduate experience successfully and make the most of the opportunities available to them.
Once admitted, SMU Cox works to ensure a smooth transition for incoming international students. Support resources include:
- International Office (IO): Assistance with visa processes, educational workshops, and special events designed to support international students across SMU.
- International Student Orientation: A dedicated orientation program held prior to the start of classes to help international students prepare for academic and campus life.
Academic Background & Transcripts
Applicants must have completed the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree and demonstrate strong academic achievement.
Required Documentation
Official transcripts should include:
- Name of the degree-granting institution
- Degree earned and date awarded
- Course of study
- A complete record of courses completed and grades earned
If academic records are not issued in English, applicants must submit an official English translation along with the original-language documents. Notarized copies may be submitted in place of original transcripts when appropriate.
Financial Certification & Student Visa
International students who require an F-1 student visa must submit a Financial Certification Form (FCF) before SMU can issue the documentation needed to begin the visa process. The FCF verifies a student's ability to fund the first year of study.
Students will receive instructions regarding the Financial Certification Form after admission. Timely submission of all required financial and visa documentation helps expedite processing and issuance of the appropriate immigration documents.
English Proficiency Requirement
TOEFL/IELTS Requirement
Applicants whose native language is not English may be required to demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the approved testing options.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are accepted. Scores are generally valid for two years from the test date. SMU's TOEFL institution code is 6660.
Please refer to your specific program's admissions requirements for the most current information regarding English proficiency testing, waivers, and test-optional policies, as requirements may vary by program and entry term.
