Biography
Alex Heidenberg’s academic work encompasses mathematics education, statistical measurement and the assessment of student learning. A retired U.S. Army colonel, he has held teaching and academic leadership positions at the United States Military Academy, its Preparatory School and Duke University.
At West Point, Heidenberg directed the Core Mathematics Program and led curriculum revisions integrating mathematical modeling, problem-solving and classroom technology. He has taught probability and statistics, calculus, mathematical modeling and discrete dynamical systems. His scholarship addresses learning assessment, curriculum design and faculty development, with publications in PRIMUS, Assessment Update and the International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology. He has also led National Science Foundation-funded initiatives in undergraduate mathematics education.
Heidenberg earned a Ph.D. in educational research, measurement and statistics from Georgia State University, a master’s degree in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree with a concentration in operations research from the United States Military Academy.
