The following offices and departments are overseen by the Associate VP for Student Affairs and Dean of Students and comprise the Division of Student Affairs group known as Student Wellbeing & Support.

Office of the Dean of Students

The Office of the Dean of Students dedicates itself to providing proactive education, expert response, and intentional collaborations to address behavioral, persona, and academic matters. The department advances the Division of Student Affairs strategic plan by compassionately empowering students to make educated and informed decisions as world changers.

Office of Student Advocacy & Support

Staff in the Office of Student Advocacy & Support oversee the Caring Community Connections (CCC) program, The Shop, and Parent & Family Programs. They work directly with and provide support to any SMU student who may be struggling outside the classroom with any sort of issue and assist in getting them connected to appropriate available resources. Services and activities are also provided to parents

Student Conduct & Community Standards

We seek to promote community, scholarship, and civility by holding students accountable to the Student Code of Conduct and the Honor Code. We assist students in understanding the importance of ethical and intentional decision making with the SMU community and beyond. We recognize when students make mistakes and assist them in bringing their actions into congruence with the expectations set forth by the University.

Dr. Bob Smith Health Center

At the Dr. Bob Smith Health Center, SMU students receive comprehensive, quality health care in a state-of-the-art campus facility. Services provided include medical services, counseling services, health education, and a pharmacy. Health Center staff members provide care with a focus on student wellness and informed lifestyle choices, which are important contributors to academic, professional and personal success. Students in crisis who feel they need immediate help from counseling services should visit the Health Center during office hours or call 214-768-2277 to reach a clinician 24/7.

Campus Recreation / Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports

Here in Campus Recreation, we'll get you going. From team sports to personal fitness to active fun, you'll find it all here. We're located in the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. The Center offers 170,000 square feet of indoor recreational space plus an outdoor social area that includes The Falls (a zero entry pool with 7-foot waterfalls), two sand volleyball courts, and leisure spaces. Come check us out and find the active way you want to live.

Mustang Band & Spirit

The Mustang Band was first organized in 1917 at SMU and known as the "Hub of SMU Spirit" and the "Best Dressed Band in the Land." The band performs at all home football games as well as a couple of away games each year. During Homecoming, the band produces the "Pigskin Revue." The band is well-known for its unusual jazz-style and up-tempo performances.

Rotunda Yearbook - For over 100 years, the Rotunda has chronicled the history of Southern Methodist University and serves as the school's primary source of recorded history. From its beautiful art to captivating themes, the Rotunda has evolved with the times, earning awards and national recognition from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP), the College Media Association (CMA) and Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA).

SMU Spirit is comprised of the Cheerleading Team, Pom Squad, and Peruna, SMU's famous mascot.

The SMU Cheerleading squad is a highly competitive, national championship-winning team consisting of 20 to 30 young men and women. The squad cheers at all home football games, bowl games, men's and women's home basketball games, volleyball games, and tournament play. Members of the SMU Cheer squad participate in community service events around campus and the Dallas area.

The Pom Squad is well known for their energetic performances and their ability to entertain a crowd. The dancing style of the team includes jazz, pom and hip hop. The Pom Squad performs on the sidelines and at halftime of all home football games and travels to some away games. The squad also performs at all men's and women's basketball games and won a national title in the Division IA Open Dance category in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Peruna, SMU's mascot, has two forms - the original is a Shetland pony with a long and storied history, dating back to the 1930s that is accompanied by a team of student handlers at football games as well as other campus and community events. The second form is the Human Peruna Mascot, who hasn't been around nearly as long, and serves as an accessory to our longtime beloved live mascot. The character is an extension of Peruna and is enjoyed by fans -- especially children -- at all SMU athletic contests. Human Peruna features traditional collegiate gear as part of his regular uniforms, but he also known to don team uniforms and other special gear during football and men's and women's basketball games.
