Biographical Note:

Lieutenant General John Sattler, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), served as director of strategy and policy, Joint Staff, from 2006 to 2008. Before accepting this appointment, Sattler was the commanding general of the First Marine Expeditionary Force and commander of the Marine Corps Forces Central Command from 2004 to 2006, and director of operations for Central Command from August 2003 to July 2004. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1971, Sattler received his commission as second lieutenant and began a career of more than 35 years of military service, from which he retired in August 2008.
