Biographical Note:

Lieutenant General Douglas Lute, U.S. Army, served as director of operations, on the Joint Staff, from 2006 to 2007. Prior to this post, Lute served from 2004 to 2006 as director of operations for the United States Central Command. Before  and during these senior appointments, Lute served a 35-year career in the U.S. Army. President Obama later appointed Lute as U.S. Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Council (NATO), where he served from 2013 until 2017.
