Year I Joined the Office of Admission: 2020 (as an ambassador) 2023 (as a counselor)

Favorite thing about SMU: One of the most distinctive and remarkable aspects of SMU that differentiates us from other universities is the structure of our student organizations. A prominent example is the Student Foundation, which stands as the largest programming organization on our campus, responsible for coordinating significant events like Homecoming and Family Weekend. Unlike most other colleges and universities that rely on full-time staff to organize such events, SMU empowers its students by granting them the opportunity and autonomy to plan our most cherished traditions. This hands-on, real-life experience is exceptionally rare and provides students with invaluable learning opportunities; and at SMU, there is an abundance of such enriching experiences readily available. The organizations I was involved in as a student not only played a pivotal role in shaping me as an individual but also gave me a family.

Favorite place on campus: When I first came to SMU, I had the opportunity to interview for the Hunt Scholarship, which took place in Harold Clark Simmons Hall. Following the interview, I came across the area near the back entrance of Fondren Library, where there are benches and pods of flowers. I sat on one of the benches to call my mom and tell her all about the interview. After about an hour, it was clear to both of us that I had fallen in love with SMU and I HAD to spend the next four years of my life here. Every time I pass this spot, I always think back to the moment I knew this was going to be my home.

Favorite place in Dallas: Choosing just one favorite is impossible, but two of my favorite places are Barley House and Louie Louie’s Piano Bar. Barley House, conveniently located across the street from school, became our weekend haven, where my friends and I spent hours catching up, cheering for sports games, and supporting our talented musician friends who created a band and sometimes performed there. On the other hand, Louie Louie’s is located in Deep Ellum and the audience requests songs to sing along to until the early hours of the morning. These unforgettable moments really shaped my experience in Dallas.

Favorite restaurant near campus: There are so many new restaurants that have popped up near campus since I first came to SMU that I absolutely love, like DL Mack’s and Ramble Room. However, when it comes to my ultimate favorite, I have to go with Banditos. In college, Banditos became the go-to place for my friends and me, no matter the occasion or mood. If we were happy, we would go there to celebrate, and we would also go if we needed a “pick me up” because the vibes simply cannot be beat! Banditos has a very special place in my heart.

What I recommend during your stay in Dallas: Highland Park Village is an absolute must-see, particularly at night when the lights illuminate the trees. There are fabulous restaurants that are worth going to, such as Honor Bar, Mi Cocina, Fachini and Lounge 31. While you’re exploring the area, I highly recommend taking a stroll along the Katy Trail, immersing yourself in the charming atmosphere of the Knox/Henderson area, and driving around the neighborhoods that surround campus. As an SMU student, you are truly fortunate to be situated in such a beautiful and safe residential environment. Students definitely take advantage of having an abundance of remarkable restaurants, charming cafes and unique shops at your fingertips, making your college experience all the more enriching and enjoyable.
