About
Dr. Brooke Ryan is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Health Management at Southern Methodist University. She earned her B.S. in Applied Physiology and Health Management from SMU before completing her Doctorate in Physical Therapy and Orthopedic Residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She is a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) and a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
At SMU, Dr. Ryan teaches across the department’s Anatomy & Physiology, Biomechanics, and Exercise Science curriculum. Her teaching emphasizes applied learning, evidence-based practice, and student engagement through hands-on experiences in a laboratory setting. In addition to classroom instruction, she contributes to departmental initiatives that promote academic integrity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional growth within the health and human performance fields.
Prior to her academic appointment, Dr. Ryan practiced clinically at Texas Health Resources (THR), where she specialized in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation for high school and collegiate athletes. She co-created the orthopedic residency curriculum at THR and delivered a variety of lectures for orthopedic and sports physical therapy residents. Dr. Ryan also brings experience from the healthcare technology industry, where she supported enterprise healthcare partnerships. Beyond academia, she remains active in the fitness community as a personal trainer and coach, having taught at a few boutique fitness studios throughout Dallas over the years. Her dedication to service extends into the community as a volunteer with the DFW Lab Rescue and the Dallas Animal Shelter. Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Ryan enjoys training for endurance events, having completed multiple half marathons and 70.3 Half Ironman races. She also loves trying new coffee shops in Dallas as well as spending her time outside with her two golden retrievers, son, and husband.
