Athletics at SMU

by |

Meet the Mustangs. They compete in Division 1-A. An elite program in the American Athletic Conference, they're consistently in a position to pursue championships. And with strong academic support and a can-do spirit, they're as dynamic off the field as they are on it — our athletes are scholars, leaders and key players in the school community.

The Numbers Game

  • Mustangs have won 17 conference team championships in the past five years.
  • 12 of our varsity teams have finished in the top three in the conference.
  • The graduation rate for SMU athletes is 20 percent higher than in the average Division 1-A program.
  • Of our 400-plus student athletes, more than half have cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher.
  • Some 20 facilities serve our student-athletes’ needs — including the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center, the Barr-McMillion Natatorium and the Payne Stewart Golf Training Center.
  • SMU's on-campus Gerald J. Ford stadium holds 32,000 football fans.
  • The school's rich athletics history includes a Heisman Trophy and eight NCAA national championships.

Building Community, One Fan at a Time

We don’t tailgate, we Boulevard. SMU college football weekends start on Bishop Boulevard, home of Dallas' most tradition-soaked tailgate event. It's a time for students, local alumni, faculty and guests of the Dean from the Dallas business world to come together as fans. And they make they most it! Stop by and you'll find tents, barbecue, big inflatable helmets, live music, kids' activities — all the fun that goes into a spirit-rousing event.

When you're ready to cheer from the stands, join the Mob, our loyal student fan group. Being a member guarantees tickets to every home game, access to exclusive team events, sweet swag and more.

At SMU, whether you're competing or a Pony fan, athletics is a core part of the culture. Long past graduation, that shared Mustang pride will be a force for connection in your alumni network. It's also a bond between campus and the Dallas community. Mention the Mustangs and you’ll feel the glow.

The help offered to a student athlete is abundant. All you have to do is capitalize on it. Aspire to be great in all that you do. Remember your path is bright.
