Cox History

The Cox School was founded in 1920 as the Department of Commerce at SMU, at the request of the Dallas business community. Today, the school’s undergraduate, graduate and executive education programs are ranked nationally and internationally by leading publications, including BusinessWeek, Financial Times, Forbes, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News & World Report.

In 2007, the Cox School published a book on the school’s history. Journey Toward Prominence: The Edwin L. Cox School of Business at SMU, 1920-2005 recounts the school’s successes and struggles on the road to international prominence.
