CC Post-hoc (Juried) Assessment

SMU uses a post-hoc (juried) assessment format to evaluate student assessment work at the end of each collection cycle.

The office of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness (IPE) begins recruiting about 30 faculty raters for all components being assessed that year early in the Spring terms (February/March). Of those 30 raters, IPE will invite one rater per Common Curriculum component/tag to act as a facilitator during the norming training process.
IPE will also invite one rater to serve as a faculty trainer during the norming training process.

The post-hoc (juried) assessment process is roughly a two-week commitment between late May and mid June each summer. It requires the following:

  • One full-day norming training (attendance is mandatory)
  • Ten days for scoring roughly 115 artifacts (scoring is mandatory)
  • One 90-minute group reflection meeting on or directly after the 10th scoring day
  • One 60- to 90-minute group meeting to discuss the report compiled by IPE approximately 3-4 weeks after the group reflection

The best part: You develop a deeper understanding of the Common Curriculum assessment process AND we pay you for your time!

Note: As of Summer 2023, the Provost's Office is now requiring IPE to verify teaching loads for all full- and part-time faculty with the Dean's Office of their respective College or Schools before finalizing contracts.
