Led by the Provost, the University's chief academic officer, the office oversees all aspects of academic life, ranging from admissions and faculty development to supervision of SMU’s eight schools, library system, and international programs.

SMU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs is responsible for the overall quality of teaching, scholarship and research at the University. The Office of the Provost champions the University's commitment to academic, research, creative and inclusive excellence by engaging in transparent communication, working closely with faculty and staff to provide a clear academic vision, providing leadership on academic strategic planning and implementation, and promoting innovation both in research and pedagogy.

The Provost’s leadership advances SMU’s mission and core values through a commitment to academic freedom and open inquiry, encouraging a community of vibrant intellectual thought and shaping students who will enter our global society as world changers.

The Provost Annual Report, Transformative, is an annual publication disseminated in January, that outlines key focus areas progress and future goals.

To improve communication and provide transparency, the Provost sends a weekly newsletter summarizing the past week's events, in addition to other, as needed, communications. Provost communications are archived digitally here.

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Elizabeth G. Loboa, Ph.D., has served as SMU’s Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since July 6, 2020. As the university’s chief academic officer, Dr. Loboa is responsible for the overall quality of teaching, scholarship and research and all aspects of academic life, ranging from admissions and faculty development to supervision of SMU’s library system, international programs, and eight degree granting schools.
