Major Declaration

An undergraduate degree in Economics from Southern Methodist University equips you with specialized analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills and an understanding of how human behavior influences the production and distribution of wealth. Economics majors can capitalize on our rigorous curriculum by choosing from a broad array of advanced Economics courses to tailor their studies to their personal interests and career aspirations.

Students interested in majoring in Economics must satisfy the three criteria listed below: 

1. Completion of 30 academic units in good standing
2. Minimum all-college cumulative GPA of 2.700
3. Completion of Economics subset courses with a minimum subset GPA of 2.700, and a minimum grade of C-:

  • WRTR 1312/2303/2305 Introduction to Academic Discourse
  • ECO 1311 Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECO 1312 Principles of Macroeconomics
  • MATH 1309/1337 Intro to Calculus for Business or Calculus I
  • STAT 2331/4340 Intro to Statistical Methods or Statistical Methods for Engineers and Applied Scientists
