Alana Owens Biography

Alana Owens joined the SMU Academic Development of Student-Athletes team in August 2022

where she serves as a Senior Academic Counselor for Men’s Basketball, Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis. Owens earned her bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College, where she also was a 4-year tennis student-athlete and captain. She then went on to earn her Master’s and Educational Specialist degrees in School Counseling from Georgia State University. During her time at Georgia State, Owens worked as a Graduate Assistant within their academic unit. Owens has previously worked at The University of Georgia as an Assistant Academic Counselor working with Men’s Basketball, Men’s Tennis, and assisted with the tutoring program and at Georgia State University as an Academic Advisor working with Football and Softball.

Owens is also involved in N4A, the professional development organization for Athletic Academics, and was selected to complete the Professional Development Institute (PDI) in 2021.
