Brief Bio:

Tony Pederson

Tony Pederson is the Belo Distinguished Chair in Journalism at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.  He holds the rank of professor and is the chair of the Division of Journalism at the university.  Pederson worked in the newspaper business for more than 30 years before joining the faculty at SMU.  He was senior vice president and executive editor of the Houston Chronicle when he assumed the Belo Chair in 2003.  He teaches Ethics of Convergent Media in the Division of Journalism.  The program at SMU stresses media convergence and learning the skills of storytelling in digital format.  Pederson writes and speaks on ethics, the First Amendment and freedom of expression issues as well as the dramatic changes under way in the media industry.  He has traveled widely in Latin America and worked on free press issues there in conjunction with the Inter American Press Association.  He served as president of IAPA in 2001.  Pederson does media, public affairs and public relations consulting.  He also serves as an expert witness in media cases. He has consulted for El Universal in Mexico City and the Houston Chronicle.  He is currently serving as president of the accrediting council for schools of journalism and communication in Latin America.
